An international fixture takes place in London on Wednesday evening as Jamaica takes on India.

The Unity Cup gets underway at The Valley, with Jamaica, India, Nigeria and Zimbabwe competing in the four-nation tournament this week.

Both of these nations missed out on World Cup qualification but will be eager to deliver a strong showing as they continue building towards the future.

Jamaica

Jamaica team overview

Jamaica returns to international action after narrowly missing out on World Cup qualification in March. The Reggae Boys saw their dreams of a first finals appearance since 1998 ended with a 1:0 defeat against DR Congo in the inter-continental playoffs.

Before that heartbreaking reversal, Jamaica had enjoyed a solid run of form, winning five and losing just one of eight previous international encounters.

Defensively strong, Rudolph Speid’s side conceded just two goals in their last six matches. Each of their five most recent matches finished with under 2.5 goals scored, and a similar outcome seems likely this week.

Head coach Speid has named an inexperienced selection for the Unity Cup. Sixteen-year-old Manchester City forward Caelan Cadamarteri is one of 11 uncapped players included in the squad.

Only five members of the Reggae Boys 23-man selection have earned more than ten caps.

India

India team overview

India arrives in the UK in high spirits after a 2:1 win against Hong Kong in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong in March. Ryan Williams opened the scoring inside four minutes on his international debut before Akash Mishra’s second-half strike ensured victory for the Blue Tigers.

Khalid Jamil’s side, ranked 136th in the FIFA Rankings - over 60 places lower than their Jamaican opponents, have been in mixed form in recent months. India won three and lost three of their last nine international fixtures.

A lack of quality in the forward areas remains an issue for the Blue Tigers. India failed to score in six of their last 12 international matches. Four of their six most recent fixtures finished with fewer than three goals scored.

Head coach Jamil has an 18-man squad available this week. Uncapped Punjab duo Ricky Shabong and Pramveer Singh are two of four uncapped players included in the selection.

Prediction

India have improved in the last couple of years, and they should make an inexperienced Jamaican side work hard for victory in a likely low-key friendly fixture.

Under 2.5 goals is my preferred pick at the Valley.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Under 2.5 Goals

  1. Jamaica have seen under 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 8 matches
  2. India have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 6 matches (competitive fixtures)
  3. Jamaica have scored an average of 1.0 goals per game in their last 7 matches

Main prediction Jamaica - India

Under 2.5 goals
