On Thursday, Faroe Islands welcome Montenegro in Group L of the European qualifying campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For the Faroe Islands, this is an opportunity to consolidate their status and pick up crucial points at home if they still hope of finishing third in the group; for Montenegro, it is a chance to recover momentum after a mixed set of results if they still want to finish second in Group L. As both teams aim to challenge the front runners in the group - Czech Republic and Croatia - this match becomes pivotal in the battle for second place and play-off contention.

Faroe Islands team overview
Faroe Islands have enjoyed a relatively positive campaign in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers so far, winning two of their five matches. Although both victories came against the group’s weakest side, Gibraltar, it does not take away from the fact that the Faroese have been highly competitive in every fixture - they have not lost any match by more than a single goal.
Their defensive discipline has been particularly commendable, as shown in narrow defeats away to the Czech Republic and Montenegro. They also proved to be a tough opponent for the 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia, who managed only a 1-0 victory. Adverse weather conditions and the artificial surface at Tórsvøllur have also played a role in making the Faroe Islands a difficult place to visit. This is reflected in their recent home record - since September 2024, they have suffered just one defeat in five home matches.
There are no major absences or injury concerns reported in the Faroe Islands camp ahead of this fixture, meaning head coach Håkan Ericson should have a full squad at his disposal.

Montenegro team overview
Montenegro, on the other hand, have fallen short of expectations in their World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign. They began brightly with back-to-back wins over Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands, but neither performance was entirely convincing. In the reverse fixture against the Faroese, Montenegro needed a stoppage-time goal in the 95th minute to finally break down their opponents’ stubborn defensive block.
Since then, things have gone downhill for Miodrag Radulović’s side. Montenegro have lost their last three qualifiers - twice against the Czech Republic and once away to Croatia - conceding a total of eight goals while failing to score in any of those matches. Their attack has looked increasingly blunt, and defensive errors have been costly against stronger opposition.
There are no widely reported high-profile injuries within the Montenegro squad ahead of the trip to Tórshavn. However, midfielder Andrija Bulatović will be suspended, having been sent off in their previous match against Croatia. His absence could further limit Montenegro’s creativity in midfield.

Prediction
Given the statistics and recent form, this looks like a tight match where Montenegro enter with a slightly better historical result (their win in March). However, their recent heavy loss to Croatia (4-0) highlights defensive frailties and may depress confidence. Faroe Islands, although underdogs, have the home advantage, and have shown in recent games that they can grind out results, especially against teams above them in the group.
A draw is a realistic outcome, perhaps 1-1, especially if Faroe Islands defend compactly and make the most of counter-attacks or set pieces, also the adverse weather conditions and artificial pitch should also work in their favour.
Prediction: Faroe Islands not to lose (double chance x1).
Three reasons we expect Double chance x1
- Montenegro have lost 3 consecutive World Cup qualifying matches, failing to score a single goal.
- Montenegro scraped through a narrow 1-0 win over the Faroese in the first leg back in March.
- Faroe Islands have won 2 of their last 3 World Cup qualifying matches and only lost 1-0 to Croatia at Tórsvøllur. Windy and unpleasant weather conditions in the Faroe Islands usually make it difficult for the opposition teams to dominate.
