Belgian Pro League format in 2026/27
The Belgian Pro League will return to a traditional league format for the 2026/27 season, ending 17 seasons of play-offs in various forms (with the exception of the 2019/20 campaign, when the play-offs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The league has been expanded to 18 teams and will operate as a straightforward round-robin competition, with no post-season play-offs. At the end of the season, the bottom two clubs will be relegated to the 2027/28 Challenger Pro League.
Club Brugge KV are the defending champions, winning their 20th title last season. They are the top favourites once again, while Union Saint-Gilloise are their only real rivals, according to the bookmakers. Still, Genk, Gent and Anderlecht will surely have something to say about that. No one was relegated after the last campaign, while three teams earned a promotion from the second tier. Beveren and Kortrijk finished first and second, respectively, while Lommel defeated Dender in the promotion/relegation play-offs.
The Belgian champions will take part in the league phase of the Champions League, and the second-placed team will earn a spot in the third qualifying round of the same tournament. The side finishing third will play in the Europa League along with the Belgian Cup winners. Finally, whoever finishes fourth, will participate in the second qualifying round of the Conference League. Who will win the 2026/27 Belgian Pro League?
Club Brugge will be the side to beat in the 2026/27 season. They did sell some of their key players in midseason, as Christos Tzolis went to Arsenal, Aleksandar Stankovic left for Inter Milan, and Raphael Onyedika came to Eintracht Frankfurt. The signings, though, were very impressive as well. First and foremost, the Blauw-Zwart signed an amazing goalkeeper in Yann Sommer, who arrived as a free agent. Midfielders Cheveyo Tzava and Felix Lemarechal, as well as striker Andrej Vasovic, are other notable signings, and Brugge have a highly experienced coach, Ivan Leko, who knows Belgian football inside out.
Union Saint-Gilloise couldn't defend their title last season, and their 38-year-old manager David Hubert has only two seasons of coaching experience in senior football. Their only real loss in midseason is the goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen, who was sold to Ipswich Town for €10 million. Saint-Gilloise was strengthened by eight players, some taken on loan, but only time will tell how quickly Hubert will be able to build a new team.
Genk are the last real contenders for the title, coached by Jess Thorup, who stepped in just three weeks ahead of the tournament. Another problem here is that Genk sold such key players as striker Hyeon-Gyu Oh and midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas. Jeppe Erenbjerg and Rafiu Dusosinmi are the notable newcomers, but the lack of time will be the biggest problem here. It's just hard to see Club Brugge not defending their trophy.
Prediction: Brugge to win their 21st title.
