Each of the Eredivisie's 18 clubs will play other sides twice per season in the league phase, resulting in a total of 306 games.

Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV have dominated the tournament, and they have enjoyed plenty of success in Europe, too. The remainder of the teams, including AZ Alkmaar, Utrecht and Twente, also have a significant fan base and are eager to represent the Netherlands in European competitions.

Here's the format of the tournament:

• The top two teams qualify for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
• The third-placed team goes into the Champions League third qualifying round.
• The team finishing fourth will take part in the UEFA Europa League along with the Dutch Cup winners.
• Teams finishing between fifth and eighth take part in the European competition play-offs.
• The bottom two teams are automatically relegated.
• The team finishing in 16th place takes part in the relegation play-offs to try and stay in the elite.

The defending champions, PSV, are huge favourites to earn another title, as they were sitting at 1.72 before the start of the tournament. This will be the fourth full season in Eindhoven for coach Peter Bosz, who won the league for three straight seasons. Obviously, the midfielder Ismael Saibari was the biggest loss for PSV. After an excellent World Cup, the Moroccan was sold to Bayern Munich for €50 million. All other key players stayed, and the club also signed goalkeeper Matej Kovar and midfielder Sven Mijnans.

The bookmakers believe that Ajax and Feyenoord are the only two rivals to PSV in the title race, sitting at 4.50 and 5.00 respectively. Curiously, both welcomed new coaches ahead of this season. Ajax will be led by Míchel, and the Spaniard has never worked outside his homeland. The capital club was very active on the transfer market, loaning the German duo of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Julian Brandt, while also signing defender Henrique Caio and striker Leonardo Marcos.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst now coaches Feyenoord after the sacking of another former Dutch international, Robin van Persie. Their midseason transfer campaign was very poor, as the young goalkeeper Tjark Ernst was the only one really strengthening the squad. There's no way Feyenoord will win the title, and the most likely scenario is that they won't qualify for the Champions League.

Prediction: PSV will win the national league for the fourth season in a row.
