How does the Grand Slam of Darts work?

Grand Slam of Darts 2025 format

All matches are played in a leg format. The 32 competitors are split into eight groups of four, with each group played in a round-robin system. A win is worth two points. The top two players from each group qualify for the playoffs.

If two players are tied on points, the tie will be settled first by leg difference, then by the result of their head-to-head match. In the case of a three-way tie, rankings will be determined in this order: leg difference, total legs won, legs won against the throw, tournament average, and, if still unresolved, a nine-dart shootout (where tied players score as high as possible with nine darts).

The number of legs needed to win increases as the tournament progresses:

  • Group stage: Best of 9 legs
  • Second round: Best of 19 legs
  • Quarterfinals, semifinals, and final: Best of 31 legs

Grand Slam of Darts qualification

The first 24 players earned their spots based on the following criteria:

  • Finalists from PDC televised tournaments held during the past twelve months (up to a maximum of 16 players)
  • Additional qualifiers (up to a maximum of 8 players)
  • Winners of European Tour events (to complete the field up to 24 players)
  • Winners of Players Championship events (to make up the total of 24 participants)

The remaining eight spots were secured through a PDC Tour Card Holder Qualifier, which took place on 31 October in Wigan. Former champions Raymond van Barneveld and José de Sousa, as well as ex-finalists Peter Wright, Rob Cross and Dave Chisnall, were among those who failed to qualify.

Who will win the Grand Slam of Darts tournament?

While Luke Humphries was victorious in the first Premier PDC Event, the World Masters, in February, Luke Littler won the next three major ranking tournaments. These two are the undoubted leaders of the PDC Tour nowadays. However, it was Gian van Veen who became the European champion at the end of October. The Dutchman has defeated Humphries in the last leg decider in the final. Van Veen is in the form of his life right now, and the odds of 10.00 for him to win the tournament are so high just because he is in a very tough group.

Other real contenders to lift the Eric Bristow trophy include Gerwyn Price, Chris Dobey, and Nathan Aspinall. Of course, you can never count out Michael van Gerwen, who holds the records for the number of appearances at the Grand Slam of Darts (16) and the highest match average here (115.19 in 2021). The Green Machine is not as lethal as he once used to be, but he is regaining form and confidence slowly but surely.

Grand Slam of Darts betting tips

Let's start by trying to predict the winner. We can't see much value in betting either Littler or Humphries, considering they weren't playing that convincingly lately. Instead, MightyTips goes with the man in top form in van Veen. Yes, he is in a very tough group with Josh Rock and Wessel Nijman, and even the match against Lisa Ashton is anything but a walk in the park. It won't get any better in the playoffs, as van Veen is set to meet Littler in the quarterfinals. Still, the odds of 10.00 are just too good to pass by.

Next, we have three value betting options on the group winners. If we do believe in our prediction on the tournament outcome, it's well worth betting that van Veen will finish first in group F at 2.37. The opponents are dangerous, especially Nijman, who averaged a record 107.67 in 2024 despite not winning a single match. Yet van Veen is the favourite in this quartet for a reason.

Another player set to become the group winner is Chris Dobey. Damon Heta has been in very poor form recently, while Martin Lukeman and Jurjen van der Velde simply lack class when compared to Hollywood. Even if the group stage matches are only best-of-nine, Dobey winning group B at 1.72 looks impossible to fail.

This one, probably, has the most risk out of the three. Still, we back Danny Noppert to win group H at 2.37. The Dutchman is another one to show decent form in October. While Jonny Clayton is a dangerous opponent, Noppert should beat the Ferret, as well as prevail against debutants Lukas Wenig and Cam Crabtree.

I’ve been a keen sports fan since childhood, and the World Cup 1994 in the United States is probably the first big competition I remember in detail. Who can forget a five-goal match by Oleg Salenko that didn't mean a thing?! I’ve worked in UEFA for 15 years, so I no longer watch football nowadays. My favourite sports are American football, baseball, darts, and snooker, and I know everything about the UFC.
