The last few seasons were tough for Valencia. They were even part of the relegation dogfight in some years, but the club from Mestalla always found a way to survive in La Liga. The current campaign could be challenging as well, as the team is, after 14 league rounds, only two points above the relegation zone. Valencia were solid lately, with four games in a row without defeat. In the most recent outing, Valencia were significant favorites, but they needed extra time to win against Cartagena SAD on the road in the Copa del Rey. The guests had big problems against the Primera RFEF side, and it wouldn't be undeserved if Cartagena SAD progressed to the next phase.

Valencia had problems beating Cartagena SAD, but Valencia's head coach, Carlos Corberan, was satisfied with the performance. He said, "We created enough chances to have avoided needing a late winner: hitting the post, hitting the crossbar… I respect every team we face. I understand why you might call our performance unacceptable, but I focus on the positives. Some players are getting on the pace, and we all need to improve. We'll do a private analysis of what we need to improve to become a better team."

Valencia will have almost the full squad for the game against Sevilla. Mouctar Diakhaby could be the only one to miss the upcoming La Liga round.  

Last season, Sevilla ended with only one point more than the relegation zone. The current year seems slightly better as they are four points ahead of the drop zone. However, any bad streak could put Sevilla in danger. Matias Almeyda's team lost two of the last three matches. In the previous game, Sevilla won 2-1 on the road in the cup against Extremadura. Although the hosts are from Segunda RFEF (fourth tier), the guests had problems recording a victory.

Sevilla had some problems against Extremadura, but the head coach, Matias Almeyda, was satisfied with a victory. He commented after the match, "It was a complicated game; it's difficult for everyone. A lot of pride is at stake here. We were coming off a defeat, and there was a lot on the line. I think we played a good game in both halves. In the first half, we could have increased our lead, and it's logical that they pushed more in the second half."

Ruben Vargas, Gabriel Suazo, Isaac Romero, Tanguy Nianzou, and Adnan Januzaj are unavailable for the trip to Valencia.
