Sturm Graz begin their Europa League campaign against in-form French visitors Rennes on Wednesday evening.

Both clubs come into this fixture in high spirts after excellent weekend victories, with Sturm overcoming Austrian leaders LASK and Rennes edging past Marseille.

The hosts usually offer plenty of attacking threat in Graz, but Rennes have enough quality to make this an intriguing and exciting Europa League contest.

Sturm Graz and Rennes meet for the first time in a competitive fixture on Wednesday.

SK Sturm Graz

Sturm Graz team overview

Sturm Graz return to action after claiming an impressive 2:1 home victory against Austrian Bundesliga leaders LASK on Sunday.

Gizo Mamageishvili opened the scoring after 34 minutes before Oumar Diakite restored Sturm's advantage after Krystof Danek had levelled the contest in first-half stoppage time.

LASK had won each of their first five league fixtures before Sturm’s fine victory over the weekend. Fabio Ingolitsch's men now sit fourth in the Bundesliga with 11 points from six fixtures.

The Blackies have won three and lost one of five games played since their Champions League qualification defeat against Fenerbahce in August.

Defensive vulnerabilities have resulted in several high-scoring contests this season. BTTS landed in each of Sturm’s last four matches. The Graz-based side failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last nine competitive fixtures.

Head coach Ingolitsch has three injury issues this week. Daniil Khudyakov, Otar Kiteishvili, Leon Grgic and Filip Rozga are expected to miss out for the Austrians.

Oumar Diakite is pushing for a recall after scoring from the bench against LASK.

Rennes

Rennes team overview

Rennes travel to Austria after extending their excellent start to the Ligue 1 season with a deserved 1:0 victory against Marseille on Friday.

Adrien Thomasson scored the only goal at Roazhon Park as Franck Haise's side secured a third successive victory.

Les Rouge et Noir had already picked up entertaining wins against Le Mans (3:2) and Angers (2:1) after opening their Ligue 1 campaign with a 2:2 draw against champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Ten points from four matches leave Rennes third in the division, level with Lille and Monaco in the early season standings.

Like Sturm, clean sheets have been an issue for the French side. Rennes conceded at least one goal in 15 of 16 matches played since April before their successful shutout against Marseille.

As a consequence of those defensive fragilities, BTTS has been a reliable choice when the Ligue 1 outfit are involved. That outcome landed in all but one of their last 14 matches (including pre-season friendlies).

Head coach Haise has a full squad available this week. The Rennes boss could retain the same starting XI that edged past Marseille.
