Sporting CP won two consecutive titles in the Portuguese national league, but now, they want to leave a deeper mark in the Champions League, too. Sporting CP started the 2025/26 season well, but after a few weaker games recently, they are second in the Liga Portugal with three points fewer than Porto. Last weekend, Sporting CP struggled in the cup, too, but they won 3-2 on the road after extra time against Pacos Ferreira. Sporting CP's head coach, Rui Borges, used that game to rotate the squad, but it was still disappointing to see the team struggling against an opponent from the second tier of national football. 

Sporting CP have almost a full squad available for Wednesday's game against Marseille, as only Daniel Braganca and Nuno Santos are unavailable for the upcoming Champions League clash. 

After one year of absence, Marseille returned to the Champions League. They are surprisingly good this season. In Ligue 1, they are at the top of the standings, with one point more than PSG, while in the Champions League, Roberto De Zerbi's team has collected three points so far. Marseille have won the last five matches in a row. In the previous game, they won 6-2 at home against Le Havre. The guests had an early 1-0 lead, but after Gautier Lloris' red card, the home side had complete control, so they secured an easy win.

Marseille won against Le Havre, and the head coach, De Zerbi, was very satisfied. He said, "It was a very important match. The first match after the break is never easy because you have to get back into the swing of things. Yesterday, I said that we needed to rediscover our enthusiasm with the Vélodrome and the supporters. We are top of the table and we want to stay there. And to do that, we have to win these kinds of matches."

Marseille have some problems with missing players. Hamed Junior Traore, Facundo Medina, Pol Lirola, Amine Gouiri, and Ruben Blanco are injured and will not play on Wednesday night in Lisbon.
