The two sides have come against each other in the Portuguese top flight five times since 2023. Sporting had the little edge over this spell, registering two wins and kept two clean sheets. Porto were on the winning side only once in that spell, while two games ended in a draw. The average number of goals per game was 2.6.

Sporting CP team overview

Sporting ended last season with a 3-1 victory over Benfica in the Taça de Portugal final, and were hoping to start the 2025–26 campaign with another title.

However, it wasn’t meant to be this time around, as the Lions lost 2–0 to Benfica in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira final just before the begining of the new league campaigm. Rui Borges’ side have responded well since then, winning all three of their Liga Portugal games so far.

The Lions scored a total of 14 goals in these three fixtures, and given that all of their last five league wins against Porto were at this ground, they will be feeling confident about getting the three points this weekend.

Ousmane Diomande, Daniel Bragança, Hidemasa Morita and Maxi Araújo will all miss Saturday’s game due to injury.

FC Porto team overview

Porto have also made a 100% start to the 2025–26 Primeira Liga campaign. The Dragons got things off with a five-star performance against Vitoria SC at the Estádio do Dragão, where they won 3–0.

Francesco Farioli’s team then followed this with a 2-0 victory against Gil Vicente on Matchday 2, before stepping up their game with a 4-0 win against Casa Pia last Sunday.

Right-back Martim Fernandes has missed all three games so far due to a knee ligament injury, and Saturday’s game comes too soon for him. The visitors' injury list also includes Samu Aghehowa and Pepê, who are dealing with muscle and eye problems, respectively.

Prediction

Both teams deserve credit for their performances in the Primeira Liga so far this season but this makes it difficult to pick a winner. Sporting have only conceded one goal, while the visitors have not conceded any. Given that the last three meetings between the two sides also ended with under two goals, I am looking forward to a close game that could go either way.

Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. Three of the last four league meetings between Sporting and Porto at this ground ended with under 2.5 goals.
  2. Porto kept a clean sheet in each of their last four games in the Primeira Liga.
  3. Sporting CP conceded just one goal during their last four league matches.
