A tense afternoon is expected at Wembley this weekend, with a Premier League place on the line in Saturday’s high-stakes showdown.

Both sides arrive slightly off their best, having faltered in the final stretch of the Championship campaign. Sheffield United, who had been pushing for automatic promotion for much of the season, saw their form dip late on. Chris Wilder’s men lost four of their final nine matches and ultimately finished the campaign third with 90 points, ten behind champions Burnley, missing out on an immediate top-flight return.

However a commanding 6:0 aggregate victory in the playoff semi-finals against Bristol City will give the Blades plenty of confidence this weekend. 

Sunderland´s form has been even poorer, with their semi-final win against Coventry breaking a five-game losing run. Still, despite winning just one of their last eight games, the Black Cats now find themselves just one win from a return to the top flight for the first time since 2018.

Goals have been in short supply in Sunderland’s recent outings. Under 2.5 goals have landed in eight of their last ten matches. Historically, play-off finals have followed a similar pattern, with ten of the last twelve finals since 2013 producing fewer than three goals.

With so much riding on the outcome, another cagey, low-scoring contest seems likely at Wembley.

While it’s a tough one to call in terms of a winner, my money is on under 2.5 goals as the standout bet for Saturday’s final.
