On Wednesday evening, Qatar U23 and Brunei U23 will face off in the first round of the AFC Asian Cup U23 Qualifiers. While Qatar U23 are a pretty regular at the main tournament, Brunei U23 are searching for their first ever appearance. This match will also be the first time that Qatar and Brunei meet at the U23 level, making it a fresh and interesting matchup.
Qatar U23 team overview
Last year, Qatar U23 reached the Asian Cup Playoffs but suffered elimination in the quarter-finals by Japan U23 after extra time. Qatar's best placement in this tournament was back in 2018, when they secured a third place. So, securing at least the main phase of the tournament is a must for the popular Maroons. Looking at the group - Bahrain U23, Brunei U23, and India U23, there is no doubt that they are the best team. Also, looking at the overall stats throughout the AFC Asian Cup U23, Qatar is the sixth-best team, much better than the other teams in the group.
Before the start of the AFC Asian Cup U23, the team played a lot of friendly matches and didn't have much success. Still, this match against Brunei U23 should be one of their easiest in a very long time, and anything but a big win would be a surprise.

Brunei U23 team overview
Brunei U23 are one of the weakest teams in the Qualifiers. In the last AFC Asian Cup U23 Qualifiers, they were atrocious, losing all three games with a combined goal difference of 0:23. That time, they faced teams like Jordan U23, Syria U23, and Oman U23, all teams that are worse than Qatar U23.
Between the two AFC Asian Cup U23 Qualifiers, Brunei U23 also competed in the Asean Championship U23, where they continued with atrocious performances. They lost all three matches with a combined goal difference of 1:17. So, even scoring a goal in these Qualifiers would be a challenge.

Prediction
Qatar U23 had their ups and downs throughout the past year. Most of their wins came against either poor teams or against younger squads like Croatia U21 or Sweden U21. Still, they should be the best team in the group and a team that has made deep runs in most of these tournaments. So, despite their poor results before the start of these Qualifiers, we do not doubt the popular Maroons would start the Qualifiers with a win.
On the other hand, Brunei U23 have been absolutely atrocious in all competitions. From the stats available to us, they have 39 consecutive losses! Additionally, the last nine losses were by two or more goal difference. So, expecting a solid result against anyone is simply unreal. Also, in the previous AFC Asian Cup U23, they lost all three games, while losing all games with three or more goal difference (9:0 vs Jordan U23, 11:0 vs Syria U23, and 3:0 vs Oman U23).
Considering all the above, but especially Brunei's absolutely atrocious record in recent games, we firmly believe Qatar will dominate and win this game by at least a couple of goals difference.
3 Reasons why Qatar U23 should win and cover the -2 AH spread
- Qatar U23 reached the quarter-finals in the previous AFC Asian Cup U23
- Brunei U23 lost 39 games in a row
- Brunei U23 have lost by two or more goals difference in the last nine games
