The two sides have faced each other nine times since 2023, with all but two of those encounters coming in the English top flight. The results from this period are quite balanced, with both sides picking up four wins each and one game ending in a draw. The average number of goals per game was two.

Newcastle team overview

Newcastle United have lost only one Premier League match so far this season, but the general sentiment surrounding the club is negative. The Magpies began their campaign with a goalless draw away at Aston Villa followed by a late defeat against Liverpool on matchday two at this ground.

They then played out another goalless draw against Leeds United, before securing their first win of the season at home against Wolves.  Their fifth league game of the season - against Bournemouth - also ended in a draw, but they found some relief by scoring four goals against Bradford City in the League Cup in midweek.

Given that all of their last three wins against Arsenal, plus their sole league victory this season, were at home, head coach Eddie Howe will be confident that his side can achieve a positive result this weekend.

Yoane Wissa remains out with an injury, but Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Gordon are back after injury and suspension respectively.

Arsenal team overview

Arsenal have only lost once this season, on matchday three against the reigning champions and league leaders, Liverpool.

The Gunners have beaten Manchester United, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, and played out a draw with Manchester City last weekend. Arteta’s team dominated proceedings against the Citizens, coming from a goal down to draw 1:1, and also recording 66% possession.

However, with five points separating them from the top of the tree, they must reduce this gap by beating Newcastle United. Kai Havertz, Martin Ødegaard, Noni Madueke and Piero Hincapié will miss the game for the visitors due to injury.

Prediction

Newcastle United have struggled to move on since Alexander Isak's departure, which has affected their attacking play. The Magpies have only scored three goals in the Premier League this season, but their defence has been solid, with four clean sheets in five games.  Arsenal, on the other hand, have also been solid defensively lately, keeping a clean sheet in all but one of their eight competitive matches so far this season. As the meetings between the two sides at St James' Park are not usually very entertaining, I am predicting a 0-0 draw.

Four reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. Arsenal kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight competitive matches.
  2. Newcastle United kept a clean sheet in four of their five league games so far this season.
  3. Only one of the last eight league games of Newcastle produced more than two goals.
  4. None of the last 7 meetings between Newcastle and Arsenal at this ground produced more than two goals.
