The Netherlands enter the game with a new coach and an attacking-minded philosophy. Xavi has said he wants his side to play with intensity, take the initiative and work hard without the ball. Virgil van Dijk remains captain, providing experience at the heart of a squad that also contains established players such as Cody Gakpo, Frenkie de Jong, who is unfortunately injured, Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders and Jeremie Frimpong. 

The Oranje were unbeaten in the group stage of the World Cup, drawing 2-2 with Japan before beating Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1. They therefore scored 10 goals in their three group matches before the 1-1 draw with Morocco in the Round of 32, which they lost after penalties.

However, Xavi will be without Donyell Malen and Justin Kluivert, who withdrew with injuries. Malen had scored six goals in his first six competitive appearances for Roma this season, while Kluivert also picked up a muscle injury. Guus Til and Mexx Meerdink have been called up as replacements.

Germany also begin a new chapter under Klopp, who has selected 24 players for the opening two Nations League matches. The coach has confirmed that Marc-André ter Stegen will start in goal, while Joshua Kimmich will captain the side. Jamal Musiala is another key attacking player expected to feature in Amsterdam. 

Germany’s performances at the World Cup were mostly unconvincing, perhaps with the exception of their 7-1 victory over Curaçao. Even their 2-1 win against Côte d'Ivoire was considered fortunate, as they scored the winning goal extremely late in stoppage time. The four-time World Cup winners subsequently lost to Paraguay 4-3 on penalties and were eliminated in the Round of 32.

There are no major new injury concerns reported in Klopp's opening squad. The German coach is also keeping Nico Schlotterbeck, Musiala and Serge Gnabry with the group for the full international period as they work back into rhythm.
