An intriguing fixture awaits on Sunday evening as two attack-minded sides face-off in the French top flight as Marseille hosts Monaco.

Marseille comes into this fixture with confidence boosted following a midweek Champions League win in Belgium while Monaco make the trip to the Velodrome after also claiming victory in the UCL against Galatasaray earlier this week.

Past meetings between these southern rivals have been entertaining, and we expect more of the same in Sunday's Ligue 1 showdown.

Marseille and Monaco have met on 17 occasions since 2017. Monaco won eight of those games while Marseille claimed six victories. 14 of those 17 fixtures finished with at least three goals scored.

Marseille team overview

Marseille return to Ligue 1 action after an impressive 3:2 win against Belgian opponents USG in the Champions League earlier this week. Mason Greenwood scored twice in an excellent road victory for Roberto De Zerbi's side.

Les Phocéens have been in decent form, picking up five wins while losing just two of nine previous fixtures across all competitions. Marseille did slip to a 1:0 defeat at Lille in their most recent Ligue 1 contest, and now find themselves third in the division, five points behind surprise league leaders Lens.

High-scoring outcomes have been frequent in Marseille's recent matches. Five of their last six games finished with over 2.5 goals scored. Past meetings between these sides have been similarly high-scoring with nine of their 12 previous encounters also seeing at least three goals scored.

Head coach De Zerbi has three players missing for Sunday's Ligue 1 matchup. Amine Gouiri, Hamed Junior Traorè and Facundo Medina all miss out for the home side.

Monaco team overview

Monaco make the short trip to Marseille after a valuable midweek win against Galatasaray in the Champions League. Folarin Balogun's second-half goal proved decisive as Sébastien Pocognoli's side held on for a 1:0 win against their Turkish visitors.

Les Rouge et Blanc have been in largely poor form domestically, with four defeats recorded in their last five Ligue 1 games. Monaco did score a famous 1:0 win against champions PSG in the midst of that losing run.

Goals can usually be expected when these sides square-off. Only three of their last 18 encounters did not finish with BTTS while three of their last five meetings at the Velodrome finished with at least three goals scored.

Head coach Pocognoli is sweating on the fitness of the three first-team players this weekend. Eric Dier, Ansu Fati and Christian Mawissa will be assessed ahead of kick-off on Sunday evening.

Prediction

A high-scoring outcome can usually be relied upon when Marseille takes on Monaco, and I expect a similar result on Sunday.

Over 2.5 goals is my best bet at the Velodrome.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Over 2.5 Goals

  1. Marseille have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches
  2. Marseille have seen over 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 away matches
