Club Brugge finished the 2025/26 campaign in outstanding form, winning four of their final six league matches while remaining unbeaten during that spell. Ivan Leko’s side ended the season with consecutive home victories over Union Saint-Gilloise (5-0) and Sint-Truiden (2-0), before securing the league title with a dominant 5-0 win against Gent. 

Brugge's attacking depth remains formidable, while their defensive organisation was arguably the best in Belgium during the decisive stages of last season. Still, despite their emphatic 5-0 victory over Union in the closing weeks of last season, Union Saint-Gilloise have become something of a bogey team for the reigning Belgian champions. Club Brugge have failed to beat Union in nine of their last 14 competitive meetings since the start of 2024, recording five defeats and four draws. 

As of the latest reports, there are no major injury crises expected, although final squad selection will depend on late fitness assessments following pre-season preparations.

Union Saint-Gilloise enjoyed another excellent campaign, lifting the Belgian Cup and once again challenging for the league title until the closing weeks. They finished the Championship Play-offs strongly, including a commanding 5-1 victory over Anderlecht, although their heavy 5-0 defeat away to Club Brugge ultimately proved costly in the title race. 

The Brussels outfit continue to possess plenty of attacking quality through Kevin Rodríguez and their energetic midfield unit, while their cup-winning mentality should give them confidence heading into another final. 

Injury reports remain relatively encouraging, with no widespread absences expected ahead of kick-off, allowing Union to field a squad close to full strength.
