Belarus look to claim their first Nations League victory of the campaign when they face San Marino in neutral Hungary on Saturday.

Viktar Hancharenka's side earned their first point in League C, Group 1 with a goalless draw in Finland, while San Marino suffered a second successive heavy defeat against Albania.

Belarus have yet to score in this season's competition, but anything less than three points would be a disaster for the designated home side.

Belarus

Belarus team overview

Belarus arrive in Budapest after earning a creditable goalless draw against Finland on Tuesday.

Hancharenka's side produced a disciplined defensive performance to collect their first point of the campaign following a 2:0 defeat against Albania last weekend.

The White Wings have yet to score in this season's Nations League, but Saturday's fixture offers an excellent opportunity to end that drought.

Belarus have improved in the last year, remaining unbeaten in six of their last seven games, including surprise World Cup qualification draws against Greece and Denmark. Their 2:2 draw in Denmark would eventually prove fatal to the Danes World Cup qualification hopes.

While Viktor Gancharenko’s side have picked up some decent friendly wins against Cyprus and Armenia this year, competitive victories have been hard to come by. Belarus failed to win any of their last 12 non-friendly fixtures.

A lack of firepower has been the biggest issue for the Belarusians. Gancharenko’s men scored just four goals in their last eight competitive fixtures.

Head coach Gancharenko could make changes after two demanding away fixtures in four days. Vladislav Morozov is among those pushing for a recall to the first XI.

San Marino

San Marino team overview

San Marino make the trip to Budapest after suffering a 3:0 home defeat against Albania on Tuesday. Goals from Anis Mehmeti, Myrto Uzuni and Rey Manaj secured a routine victory for the Red and Blacks.

Roberto Cevoli's side had already endured a chastening start to life in League C, losing 7:0 against Finland in their opening fixture.

Competing in the third-tier of the Nations League following their promotion from League D, the visitors have now conceded ten goals without scoring in this season's competition.

Still, while once the whipping boys of European football, San Marino have improved defensively in the past year. Cevoli’s men conceded three goals or less in six of their last eight games including a 1:0 defeat against Czechia in a friendly last year.

Cevoli may freshen up his starting XI after successive home losses, but Nicola Nanni should remain the focal point of the attack.

Prediction

Belarus should dominate possession in Budapest, but their lack of cutting edge suggests they may only secure a comfortable win this weekend.

Under 3.5 goals is my best bet on Saturday.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Under 3.5 Goals

  1. Belarus scored 4 goals in their last 8 competitive matches
  2. San Marino have seen under 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches
  3. Belarus have seen under 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 9 matches
