Two European heavyweights collide on Tuesday evening as Atletico Madrid take on Manchester United.

Diego Simeone's side return to UEFA Champions League business after maintaining their excellent domestic form with a hard-fought victory at Alaves, while United conceded a stoppage-time equaliser against ten-man Tottenham.

Atletico have been far more convincing in recent weeks, and will be confident of adding to the visitors' woes at Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid and Manchester United have met on two occasions in competitive fixtures since 2020. Atletico won one game, while one match finished level.

The Spaniards claimed a 1:0 victory at Old Trafford in their last encounter four years ago.

Atletico Madrid team overview

Atletico Madrid turns their attention to the UEFA Champions League after securing a dramatic 2:1 victory against 10-man Alaves on Saturday.

Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring before Lucas Boye brought the hosts level. Atletico eventually made their numerical advantage count, with Cristian Romero heading home a late winner.

Simeone's men have now won four successive league matches since beginning their Champions League campaign with a narrow 2:1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.

Atletico have been particularly impressive in their two most recent home fixtures, claiming a commanding 4:0 victory against Osasuna before beating city rivals Real Madrid 2:1.

Last season’s UCL home form also gives cause for optimism. Atletico won three of four league phase fixtures. All four games finished with BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored.

The hosts have no confirmed injury absentees ahead of Tuesday's contest. Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sorloth both returned to action against Alaves after recovering from injury.

Simeone could freshen his starting lineup following Saturday's demanding victory. Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth and Conor Gallagher are among those pushing for recalls.

Manchester United team overview

Manchester United make the trip to Madrid after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in Saturday's 1:1 EPL draw against ten-man Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo fired United into a second-half lead, but Michael Carrick's side failed to capitalise after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw. Dominic Solanke struck late to rescue a point for Spurs.

The Red Devils have now won only one of their last six competitive fixtures. A commanding 4:0 Champions League victory against Sabah was their only success during that sequence.

Despite failing to win any of their last four matches, United have consistently got on the scoresheet, with at least one goal scored in five of their last six fixtures.

Without a win in their last three away fixtures, United also suffered defeat in two of three UCL away games in their appearance in the competition three years ago.

Head coach Carrick remains unable to call on several first-team players. Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Tom Heaton, Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu are expected to remain unavailable.

Noussair Mazraoui is doubtful after suffering a back problem, while Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford will also require late fitness checks.

Prediction

Atletico Madrid have found some good form in recent fixtures, and they should have enough experience and nous to see-off a low-confidence Man Utd side.

I fancy the hosts to win a match likely to see at least three goals scored.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Atletico Madrid to Win

  1. Atletico Madrid won their last 4 league matches
  2. Manchester United failed to win 5 of their last 6 matches
  3. Manchester United lost 2 of their last 3 away UCL matches
