Ajax return to the Champions League eager to put last season’s domestic collapse behind them. A nine-point lead in the Eredivisie slipped away in the spring, leaving them without a major trophy for the third year running. 

John Heitinga’s return has steadied the ship, with the Sons of the Gods unbeaten so far this campaign, including three home wins and a 3:1 success over PEC Zwolle last weekend. Progression in Europe has been rare since their 2019 semi-final run, but confidence is building again in Amsterdam.

Frequently involved in high-scoring matches, both domestically and in Europe, Ajax have seen BTTS in four of their last five continental fixtures.

Heitinga has a near full squad to choose from this week, with Branco van den Boomen the only confirmed absentee. Wout Weghorst and Mika Godts are expected to lead the attack, supported by Steven Berghuis.

Inter head into Wednesday´s first UCL fixture of the campaign still recovering from last season’s crushing 5:0 Champions League final defeat to PSG. The Nerazzurri finished runners-up in Serie A and have since appointed Christian Chivu as head coach as they look to avoid another trophyless campaign. 

However, results have been mixed so far. A 5:0 thrashing of Torino was followed by a shock 2:1 home defeat against Udinese  before a chaotic 4:3 Derby d’Italia against Juventus last weekend.

Entertaining outcomes have been frequent in Inter's recent UCL matches. Five of their last six matches finished with BTTS, while an average of 4.66 goals per game scored in those fixtures. Fifteen goals were scored in their three most recent matches, while six of their last nine games finished with over 2.5 goals scored.

Inter travel to Amsterdam with a full squad available. Manuel Akanji could feature after making his debut in last weekend's defeat against Juventus. Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez are expected to spearhead the attack.
