Scotland face England at Murrayfield Stadium on Valentine's Day, as it’s time for the oldest rivalry in rugby union history. The teams first met in March 1871, making it the earliest international rugby match ever. This will be the 144th test between the sides, and they were preparing for it in a completely different mood.
England are on a 12-match winning streak, demolishing Wales 48-7 in the opening game of the 2026 Six Nations Championship. In the meantime, Scotland lost 18-15 away to Italy. That significantly increased the pressure on their coach, Gregor Townsend, who might lose his job very soon.
In this article, MightyTips talks about team news, form, and key stats, before making a prediction for the game in Edinburgh and providing two betting tips to think about.

The teams have met 143 times before, and England hold an upper hand with 77 victories, 19 draws, and 47 defeats. However, at home, Scotland won 31 times, along with 11 draws and 30 losses. England won by a single point in Twickenham in the 2025 Six Nations Championship, but the Scots prevailed in four games in a row before that.
Scotland had mixed results in 2025 with six wins and six defeats. They finished fourth in the Six Nations Championship, defeating Italy and Wales, but losing the other three matches. The 16-15 loss against England in Twickenham was especially painful, as the Scots were super close to beating their archrivals for the fifth time in a row. However, 2026 started with a surprising loss in Italy, where Scotland were better in every aspect, except for the points scored.
Townsend has made four changes to his starting line-up ahead of the Calcutta Cup, focusing on the forwards. Earning his first Six Nations start at loosehead prop, Nathan McBeth joins the front row. Alongside him, George Turner returns at hooker, while seasoned tighthead Zander Fagerson completes the trio. In the second row, Gregor Brown steps into the starting XV, partnering with Scott Cummings. The only other alteration sees former skipper Jamie Ritchie return at blindside flanker.
Behind the pack, however, Scotland makes no changes after the opening round. Once again, key playmaker Finn Russell and Ben White steer the team from the half-back pairing. “It’s our biggest game of the season, it always has been. It’s even more important on the back of a defeat, a disappointing defeat”, said Townsend.
England are showing outstanding form, having suffered a single defeat throughout 2025, which came on the road against Ireland. That loss, while costly in terms of finishing top of the 2025 Six Nations, instead fueled a powerful response. The team bounced back impressively, stringing together 12 consecutive victories, rising to third in the World Rugby rankings, and demonstrating far greater consistency under Steve Borthwick than in past campaigns. The first test in the current tournament was a walk in the park, as Wales simply had no answers to the Red Rose and lost by 41 points.
The main story is the return of Maro Itoje to the starting lineup after a difficult, brief appearance in the previous match, as he also takes back the captain’s armband. The only other alteration among the forwards sees Luke Cowan-Dickie come in at hooker.
The backline stays the same following Henry Arundell’s clinical hat-trick in the opening round. On the bench, England opt for a 6-2 split, with fly-half Fin Smith included among the replacements to provide cover for George Ford.
“Playing Scotland at Murrayfield is a challenge we are relishing”, said Borthwick. “We made a pleasing start to the Championship, but we understand that we must continue to raise our standards”.
I'm really sorry, babe, something's come up...🤫

With the last head-to-head games being very even, we expect another tight battle in Glasgow. Without any doubt, Scotland will be extra motivated, as winning this test is arguably more important than finishing first in the Six Nations Championship. Betting half a unit on Scotland at 3.75 is definitely worth thinking about, but we’ll choose a safer option. Scotland +8.5 points at 1.80 is the pick.
Another appealing betting option is Scotland to win either half at 1.80. The game should be close, regardless of the odds. Playing at home, the Scots may exceed expectations to secure another victory over their rivals. Since we are seriously considering them winning outright, prevailing in either half is very plausible.
