Bet of the Day – 25.11.2025

With half of the league phase over in the UEFA Champions League, there are only two teams who couldn’t earn a single point. Curiously, both are the former holders of the Champion Clubs' Cup, but now Ajax and Benfica must jump over their heads if they are to qualify for the knockout phase playoffs.

Ajax have been without a coach since November 6, a day after they were defeated 3-0 by Galatasaray in the UCL. John Heitinga lost his job, and Fred Grim stepped in as an interim coach. We can't even remember when Ajax were this low in the Eredivisie, currently lying in sixth. They were defeated 2-1 in the last two league matches by Utrecht and Excelsior.

Benfica are doing a bit better in their national league under José Mourinho, occupying third place. However, they lack stability as well, which was underlined by a recent 2-2 home draw against modest Casa Pia. Being the heavy favourites, the Eagles should score more than once in the capital of the Netherlands.

With both sides on the brink of being eliminated from the Champions League, only a victory will suit each one. That's why both will be going forward at will, and attack should prevail over defence in this one. In five of the last six Ajax matches, over 2.5 goals were scored combined by the opponents. With Benfica, over 2.5 goals were hit in five of their previous seven matches. We do expect the goals at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

I’ve been a keen sports fan since childhood, and the World Cup 1994 in the United States is probably the first big competition I remember in detail. Who can forget a five-goal match by Oleg Salenko that didn't mean a thing?! I’ve worked in UEFA for 15 years, so I no longer watch football nowadays. My favourite sports are American football, baseball, darts, and snooker, and I know everything about the UFC.
