The African Nations Championship kicks off Monday evening as Uganda host Algeria at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

This Group Stage clash carries significant weight, with both nations looking to make eyeing a start in the competition. For Uganda, it's a chance to prove themselves against one of Africa’s traditional heavyweights, while Algeria arrive as in-form favourites looking to maintain an excellent run of form this year.

With Algeria winning all three previous encounters, the Greens will be fancied to claim victory in Monday`s opener in Kampala. But who will come out on top this week?

Uganda

Uganda team overview

Uganda come into this clash in less than stellar  form, having lost four of their last seven matches, including a pair of 3:0 defeats against Cameroon in June.

The Cranes have struggled for cutting edge in the final third, failing to score in three of those defeats. While home advantage at Mandela National Stadium may give them a boost, Paul Put’s side lacks the quality to trouble a strong Algerian side.

Uganda have also shown defensive fragility, often conceding early, while they have rarely looked capable of keeping clean sheets against higher-ranked opposition.

Head coach Put has a relatively inexperienced squad to choose from this week. Isaac Muleme and Nicholas Wadada are the only players included with more than 50 international caps.

Algeria

Algeria team overview

Algeria arrive in Kampala with plenty of reason to be confident ahead of Monday´s fixture. The Desert Foxes won six successive games before a thrilling 4:3 friendly defeat aganst Sweden earlier this summer.

Usually reliable at the back, Algeria kept clean sheets in each of their last three victories and with a strong record against Uganda, will be expected to claim victory in Kampala.

Led by experienced boss, Vladimir Petković, Algeria can call on several European-based stars including Riyad Mahrez, Ismaël Bennacer and Amine Gouiri. Experienced winger Mahrez is poised to win his 103rd international cap this week.

Prediction

An in-form Algeria should be able to claim a relatively straight-forward victory on Monday. Considering their superb recent form, and dominance of this fixture in past encounters, the Greens should be capable of claiming the points.

An away win is my best bet at Mandela National Stadium, Kampala.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Algeria to Beat Uganda

  1. Algeria won 6 of their last 7 matches
