Two Europa League newcomers meet in Portugal on Thursday as Torreense take on Sunderland in Leiria.

Both clubs made winning starts to their first ever Europa League campaigns in September but then fell to defeat in last weekend’s domestic fixtures.

The Black Cats have struggled for consistency this season but will be optimistic of returning to Wearside with a first-ever away win in Europe.

Torreense

Torreense team overview

Torreense return to Leiria after a painful 1:0 defeat against Tondela in the Portugues Primeira Liga on Saturday.

Luis Tralhao's side looked set to claim an away point before Rodrigo Cascavel scored in the tenth minute of stoppage time.

The Portuguese second-tier side have now won only two of eight competitive matches this season, although one of those victories came in their historic European debut last month.

Alejandro Alfaro and Manu Pozo scored as Torreense claimed a 2:1 win in Norway against Lillestrom.

Still, without a win in any of three home games this season, the Blue-garnets will need to raise their game for one of the biggest fixtures in their history.

Head coach Luis Miguel Valado Tralhao has just one confirmed absentee for Thursday’s Europa League contest. Nuha Jatta is suspended after being sent off on matchday one.

Malik Abubakari should continue to lead the attack with Dany Jean, Joao Marques and Manu Pozo providing support in the final third.

Sunderland

Sunderland team overview

Sunderland travel to Portugal after slipping to a frustrating 2:0 home defeat against Brighton in the Premier Leagur last weekend.

Maxim De Cuyper opened the scoring shortly after half-time before Jaouen Hadjam secured the points in stoppage time. Sunderland offered little response despite playing against ten men for more than half an hour.

Regis Le Bris's side have made a slow start to their EPL campaign, winning one and losing four of their opening six fixtures. The Black Cats have lost each of their three most recent league matches.

Sunderland did make a winning start to their Europa League campaign, though. The English side marked their first continental appearance in 53 years with a 1:0 victory against AZ Alkmaar last month.

Enzo Le Fee converted a second-half penalty as Le Bris’s men put in a dominant performance at the Stadium of Light.

French boss Le Bris has four expected absentees this week. Dan Ballard, Habib Diarra, Romaine Mundle and Brian Brobbey are expected to remain unavailable with various injury issues.

Omar Alderete, Malick Fofana and Thomas Meunier are among those pushing for recalls this week.

Prediction

Sunderland should claim the points, but Torreense are likely to provide stubborn resistance in Portugal.

With the visitors averaging just one goal per game this season, a low-scoring contest seems likely on Thursday.

Under 3.5 match goals is my best bet.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Under 3.5 Goals

  1. Sunderland have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches
  2. Torreense have seen under 3.5 goals in 7 of their last 9 matches
  3. Sunderland scored an average of 1.0 goal per game in their last 8 matches
