Sparta Rotterdam begin the new campaign with clear ambitions to improve on last season, when they finished in a respectable but ultimately disappointing 10th place, missing out on a European position for a second consecutive year.

The Rotterdam outfit’s biggest obstacle in their pursuit of a top-nine finish was undoubtedly their fragile defensive record, with Sparta conceding 62 goals over the course of the campaign. A late-season collapse, coupled with tensions within the club, eventually led to Robin van Persie leaving his position as head coach, paving the way for the return of one of Feyenoord’s greatest Dutch icons, Giovanni van Bronckhorst. His appointment has delighted supporters at De Kuip, particularly given that he previously guided the club to their first league title in 18 years during the 2016-17 campaign.

Gio has now returned with the clear ambition of bringing the Eredivisie trophy back to Rotterdam, while the summer transfer window has been used to reshape and strengthen the squad. Their pre-season campaign has also provided plenty of encouragement, with Feyenoord winning all five of their friendly matches, including an impressive 2-1 victory over Atalanta in their final warm-up fixture.

Feyenoord head into the Rotterdam derby with a strong squad available and no major absentees to worry about, while teenage forward Shaqueel van Persie, son of the club legend, is pushing for a starting role after scoring twice late on in the previous derby.
