The Estadio José Zorrilla is the venue for World Cup 2026 qualifying action on Tuesday evening as Spain take on struggling Bulgaria.

Two nations with vastly contrasting form face-off this week with Spain searching for a fourth consecutive qualifying victory against a Bulgarian side still pointless in Group E.

Previous encounters have been rare, with Tuesday´s matchup only their third coming together in 27 years.

Spain

Spain team overview

Spain maintained their perfect start to their World Cup qualification campaign with a comfortable 2:0 win against Georgia on Saturday. Despite a first-half penalty miss from Ferran Torres, goals from Yeremy Pino and Mikel Oyarzabal secured a third successive Group E win for Luis De La Fuente´s side.

Sitting at the top of the section, Spain began their campaign with a 3:0 win in Bulgaria before a sensational 6:0 destruction of Turkey last month.

An excellent run of form in the past 18 months has seen the Spanish remain unbeaten (excluding penalty shootouts) in their last 23 international fixtures. Spain claimed victories in 18 of those matches, with a Nations League defeat via spot kicks against Portugal their only blemish since a 1:0 defeat against Colombia in March 2024.

Head coach De La Fuente could make one or two changes to his side this week. Alejandro Baena, Borja Iglesias and Pablo Barrios are in contention to earn starting opportunities in Valladolid.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria team overview

Bulgaria face the daunting trip to Spain on the back of a painful 6:1 home defeat against Turkey on Saturday. Having gone into the break level, a dreadful second period saw the Bulgarians concede four goals in just 16 minutes before İrfan Can Kahveci´s stoppage-time goal secured a commanding road win for the Turks.

A miserable start to their qualification campaign has seen Bulgaria lose all three games, while conceding 12 goals in the process. Aleksandar Dimitrov´s side slipped to back-to-back 3:0 defeats against Spain and Georgia last month.

Over the longer period, Bulgaria have now lost six of their last eight matches, while they have picked up just one victory in 11 games played over the past year.

Head coach Dimitrov is likely to make some alterations to his first XI on Tuesday. Ivan Turitsov and Zdravko Dimitrov are among those in contention to earn recalls to the selection.
