The African Nations Championship continues in Kampala on Monday as South Africa face Guinea at the Mandela National Stadium. This will be just the third meeting between the two nations, with previous encounters proving closely contested.

Both sides are looking to strengthen their position in the group stage, with South Africa looking to build on a 1:1 draw with Algeria on Friday, and Guinea looking to bounce back from a 3:0 reversal against host nation Uganda.

South Africa

South Africa team overview

South Africa showed their quality in picking up a 1:1 draw against a strong Algerian side on Friday. Thabiso Kutumela's goal secured a hard-fought point for Hugo Broos's men.

The Bafana Bafana have made significant improvements over the past 18 months, winning 10 and losing just two of their last 16 international matches.

The South Africans have built a reputation for defensive resilience and tactical discipline, with most of their recent games proving low scoring affairs. South Africa have seen under 2.5 goals in ten of their last 12 matches,

South Africa claimed 2:0 win in six of their last eight victories, and with Guinea failing to score in their last three defeats, a similar outcome could be on the cards on Monday.

Head coach Broos is likely to retain confidence in the same side that started Friday's draw against Algeria.

Guinea

Guinea team overview

Guinea face their third fixture of the competition after a disappointing 3:0 defeat against Uganda on Friday. Michel Dussuyer's men struggled to match the host nation with Ivan Ahimbisibwe's late goal putting the seal on a comfortable win for the Ugandans.

The National Elephants remain in contention to qualify for the latter stages of the African Nations Championship, though, after a 1:0 win against Niger last week.

Like the South African's low-scoring outcomes have been frequent for Guinea. Only one of their last six games finished with more than two goals scored.

Michel Dussuyer is likely to make some changes to his starting selection on Monday. Ismael Camara and Mohamed Youla could earn recalls after second-half substitute appearances against Uganda.

Prediction

Considering both nations recent results, a low-scoring contest seems likely in Monday's African Nations Championship contest in Uganda.

While I fancy the South Africans to claim victory, under 2.5 goals is my best bet at Mandela National Stadium, Kampala, Uganda.

  1. South Africa have seen under 2.5 goals in ten of their last 12 matches
  2. Guinea have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches
  3. South Africa have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 2 matches against Guinea
