On Sunday, Scotland host Belarus at Hampden Park in a crucial Group C fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers. Scotland come into the match unbeaten in their opening three qualifying games and are firmly in contention for direct or playoff qualification. Belarus, meanwhile, have had a difficult start to the campaign, conceding heavily and yet to pick up a single point. For Scotland, this is an opportunity to consolidate their position at the top of the group if Denmark fail to beat Greece in the other group fixture.

The two teams have met only once before in the current qualifying cycle - in early September 2025 - when Scotland won 2-0 away in Belarus. The other two meetings between the two sides took place exactly 20 years ago - Belarus were the better side over the two legs, claiming a historic 1-0 away win before playing out a goalless draw in Minsk.

Scotland

Scotland team overview

Scotland have been in strong form in these WC 2026 qualifiers so far. In their most recent match, they beat Greece 3-1 at Hampden Park, overturning a goal deficit with goals from Ryan Christie, Lewis Ferguson, and Lyndon Dykes. That result leaves them unbeaten in three group matches, level on points with Denmark but trailing on goal difference. Their qualification path is looking favourable, though, if they beat Belarus on Sunday and Greece lose to Denmark, Steve Clark’s men would guarantee themselves at least a playoff spot.

Right-back Aaron Hickey was substituted off in the 57th minute against Greece as a precaution and is a doubt for Sunday.

Belarus

Belarus team overview

Belarus’ form has been poor in these WC 2026 qualifiers, particularly defensively. Their latest qualifier saw them suffer a heavy 6-0 defeat to Denmark, exposing major defensive vulnerabilities. Prior to that, they also lost 5-1 away to Greece and have now averaged 4.3 goals conceded per game. Their attack has also been almost non-existent, failing to generate high-quality chances and scoring only one goal in three matches.

No major injury reports for key players have been widely circulated. They are expected to stick to a tried and tested 5-3-2 formation on Sunday.

Prediction

Given all available data, Scotland are clear favourites for this fixture. Their recent comeback win over Greece shows both resilience and goal threat, and Belarus’ appalling defensive display against Denmark and Greece make them even more vulnerable ahead of Sunday. Scotland should control possession, create more chances, and likely keep a clean sheet or suffer limited damage. Belarus, on the other hand, will be under pressure and might resort to defensive, cautious tactics, but are unlikely to contain Scotland for the full 90 minutes, especially at Hampden Park.

A plausible prediction is a 2-0 or 3-0 win for Scotland.

Three reasons we expect BTTS - NO

  1. Belarus have failed to score against Scotland and Denmark - their only goal of the qualifying campaign has come against Greece.
  2. Scotland kept clean sheets against Belarus and Denmark, conceding their first goal of the qualfiiers against Greece.
  3. Scotland beat Belarus 2-0 in the reverse fixture back in September, restricting Belarus’s attack to an xG score of just 0.33.
