Europa League action returns to the Red Bull Arena on Thursday evening as Salzburg hosts FC Porto in the first matchday of the league phase.
Regular Champions League participants, both teams now turn to Europe’s second-tier competition for their first ever meeting. Porto have the form, but can Salzburg make home advantage count and take a positive result?
Salzburg team overview
Salzburg comes into Thursday's Europa League encounter looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2:0 home reversal against Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga last weekend.
Thomas Letsch´s side have not been at their best in recent weeks, falling to back-to-back league defeats. RB slipped to a shock 2:0 defeat against WAC ten days ago.
Now winless in three games, Salzburg failed to win four of their first seven league games this season, while they fell to a Champions League playoff defeat against Club Brugge.
Frequently involved in high-scoring matches, Salzburg have seen over 2.5 goals scored in seven of their last eight games, including two of their last three defeats.
Head coach Letsch could make some alterations to his first XI this week. However, Karim Konaté, Takumu Kawamura, John Mellberg, and Valentin Sulzbacher remain unavailable for selection.
Summer signing Luuk de Jong faces a late fitness to determine his availability on Thursday.

FC Porto team overview
FC Porto arrives in Austria in tremendous form having maintained their 100% winning record this season with a 3:0 win against Rio Ave last weekend. Spanish forward Samu Aghehowa was again on the scoresheet as Francesco Farioli´s side eased to a comfortable road victory.
An impressive run of form has seen the visitors win each of their first six league fixtures, scoring 15 goals while conceding just once.
Considering the visitors fine start to the season, a high-scoring road win seems likely on Thursday. A minimum of three goals were scored in eight of their last ten victories (competitive fixtures).
Head coach Farioli is likely to retain confidence in much of the same XI that eased past Rio Ave on Sunday. Injured trio Martim Fernandes, Nehuén Pérez and Alberto Costa are expected to remain sidelined.

Prediction
Porto are in excellent form, and should prove too strong for an inconsistent RB Salzburg in Thursday´s Europa League matchup. An away win is my best in Austria.
Three Reasons Why We Expect Porto to Win
- Porto won their last 8 matches
- Porto won 8 of their last 9 home matches
- Salzburg lost 4 of their last 9 matches
