The Allianz Riviera Stadium is the venue for a Europa League contest on Wednesday evening as Nice takes on Serie A opponents Roma.

Roma make the trip to Italy in high spirits after victory in the Rome derby on Sunday, while Nice return to action looking to bounce back from a heavy Ligue 1 defeat against Brest.

Now set to meet in their first-ever competitive contest, the Italians come into this fixture as favourites to emerge with victory on the opening night of Europa League action.

OGC Nice

Nice team overview

Nice come into Thursday's Europa League encounter having slipped to a heavy 4:1 defeat against Brest on Sunday. Two goals conceded in the opening ten minutes ensured a long-day at the office for Franck Haise's side.

A largely miserable start to the season has seen Les Aiglons lose five of seven games played, including their Champions League qualifiers against Benfica last month.

Placed 12th in Ligue 1, Haise's men did claim victories in both of their last two home fixtures, including a 1:0 win against Nantes ten days ago.

Head coach Haise is likely to make some alterations to his first XI this week. Kevin Omoruyi and Isak Jansson are tipped to earn recalls to the starting selection.

Injured quintet Tanguy Ndombélé, Mohamed Abdelmonem, Youssouf Ndayishimiye, Moïse Bombito and Ali Abdi are all ruled out for the home side.

AS Roma

Roma team overview

Roma make the trip to Southern France in high spirits after a well-deserved 1:0 derby win against Lazio on Sunday. In a typically fiery affair in which the hosts were reduced to ten men, Lorenzo Pellegrini's first-half strike proved the difference at the Olimpico.

A solid start to the new season under former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has seen I Giallorossi claim 1:0 victories in three of four games played. Roma's only blemish was a 1:0 home defeat against Torino last week.

Goals have been a scarce commodity in the Italians recent results. Each of their last four games saw exactly one goal scored, while under 2.5 goals were recorded in 12 of their last 14 competitive fixtures since mid-March.

A strong defense has been the foundation for Roma's recent success. I Giallorossi kept clean sheets in seven of their last ten competitive matches. Remarkably, the visitors claimed 1:0 victories in nine of their last 11 competitive wins since March.

Head coach Gasperini is unlikely to make too many alterations from the side that claimed Rome bragging rights on Sunday. The visitors have four injury issues with Paulo Dybala, Wesley, Mario Hermoso and Edoardo Bove expected to miss the trip to France.

Prediction

Roma are in much better form, and they should return to Italy with another road victory in the bag.

I'm backing the visitors to claim victory in a likely low-scoring Europa League contest.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Roma to Win

  1. Roma won 3 of their last 4 matches
  2. Roma won 4 of their last 5 matches
  3. Nice lost 5 of their last 7 matches
