- Competition: EFL Trophy
- Date: Wednesday, 15th October, 2025
- Kickoff: 19:45 UK / 20:45 CEST
- Venue: One Call Stadium (Mansfield)
On Wednesday evening, Mansfield will welcome the Newcastle U21 team in the second round of the EFL Trophy at One Call Stadium in Mansfield. Both teams opened the competition with losses and will try to get their first points. However, the EFL Trophy is one of the competitions where teams often rotate a lot, and we expect that in the upcoming tie as well, especially from the hosts.
Let's break down the match and find the best possible bet for this EFL Trophy tie.

EFL Trophy
These teams met just twice - in 2021 and 2024 in the EFL Trophy. Mansfield were hosts in both of those matches and secured a 6:3 and a 3:0 win.
Mansfield team overview
Mansfield managed to secure promotion to League One in the 2023/24 season and had a decent following season, finishing 17th with 54 points. This year, the Stags have been solid as they sit in 12th place with 15 points from 11 rounds - 1.36 per game. That is slightly better compared to last season, and if they continue with such performances, they will not have problems floating around the middle of the table.
In the EFL Trophy, Mansfield lost the first match vs Harrogate, but they have heavily rotated the squad, considering they are not too interested in this competition. We believe they will once again rotate and use pretty much the same squad as they did against Harrogate.

Newcastle U21 team overview
Last year, Newcastle U21 finished 9th in the Premier League 2 - out of 26 teams. They reached the Playoffs but were eliminated by Arsenal U21 (2:1) in a pretty close match. Unfortunately, the young Magpies did not continue with such performances, far from it. They are currently sitting in 28th place out of 29 teams this season with only two points after the first six rounds.
In the first EFL Trophy, Newcastle were outclased (6:2) by another League One team, Huddersfield. And since the Terriers played with an entirely rotated squad, it was a tough result to take. So, it is not a surprise they are again a huge underdog against a League One team.

Prediction
Mansfield are in a pretty poor form right now, winning just once in the last eight games across the competitions. However, almost all of their poor performances came on the road. At home, throughout the season, they have three wins in six games against much better competition than Newcastle U21. Also, even though they lost to Harrogate in the previous EFL Trophy game, they were really good and deserved at least a draw, if not a win.
Meanwhile, Newcastle U21 were atrocious in their first EFL Trophy game, losing 6:2 to Huddersfield. They are generally playing poorly, losing five out of nine games - 56%. To be fair, they had solid performances on the road, but we doubt they can maintain that against a League One team.
Mansfield also won the previous h2h games while covering the -1.5 Spread. Considering all the above, we believe the hosts will dominate and secure a comfortable win with at least two goals difference.
3 Reasons why Mansfield should win and cover the -1.5 AH spread
- Mansfield won three out of six home games against much better teams than Newcastle U21
- Newcastle U21 lost five out of nine games this season
- Mansfield won the previous two h2h games 3:0 and 6:3
Main prediction Mansfield Town - Newcastle United U21
AH1 (-1.5)
