Pep and his Man City side will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon when they welcome in form Bournemouth to the Etihad Stadium.  Surprisingly, the Citizens sit below their visitors in fifth place, while Andoni Iraola's side are second just four points below the leaders Arsenal. Although City are the favourites, their inconsistent performances in recent months, coupled with Bournemouth's unbeaten run of nine matches, suggest that it will be a close game.

The two sides have faced each other nine times since 2020, six of which were in the English top flight. Manchester City dominated this period, winning eight times and scoring three or more goals in four of those matches. Bournemouth only managed one win, which was in the Premier League last year. The average number of goals scored per game during this period was 3.67.

Manchester City

Manchester City team overview

After losing two of their opening three games of the season, Manchester City fans were reminded of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign, when their run of four consecutive titles came to an end.

The Cityzens responded with an eight-match unbeaten run, a spell which saw them picked up wins over the likes of Brentford, Everton, Manchester United and Burnley in league.

Unfortunately, this run came to an end against Aston Villa last weekend at Villa Park, where the Citizens failed to score for only the second time this season and lost 1:0.

Memories of that defeat have now faded after the 3-1 win over Swansea in the League Cup on Wednesday, but beating Bournemouth won't be easy.

Rodri has returned to training following his hamstring injury against Brentford before the October international break, but Sunday’s game will come too soon for the Spaniard. Haaland looks set to return to the starting eleven, and the Norwegian will be looking to add to his tally of 11 Premier League goals this season.

AFC Bournemouth

Bournemouth team overview

Bournemouth's ninth-place finish in the Premier League last season was their best in the top flight for eight years. The success appears to have given them a boost, as the Cherries have upped their game and are currently sitting in second place.

Andoni Iraola’s team didn’t have the best start, losing their opening game 4-2 to Liverpool, but they have been unbeaten in the league since then.

Their eight-match unbeaten run features wins against Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Brighton, Tottenham and Wolves, so their chances of getting something from the Etihad this weekend are high.

However, Enes Ünal (cruciate ligament), Evanilson (calf) and David Brooks (hamstring) will not be available for the trip to the Etihad this weekend due to injury.

Prediction

Boasting victories in each of their last nine home games against Bournemouth and in each of their last four home matches, Manchester City are the favourites to win this game. However, Pep’s team have not performed well in important games this season. The Cityzens failed to beat Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspiur, forcing me to predict a 1-1 draw.

Three reasons we expect both teams to score in this game

  1. Bets on btts – yes won in five of the last six meetings between City and Bournemouth.
  2. Bournemouth have failed to score in just one of their nine league games this season.
  3. Man City have conceded at least one goal in 7 of their last 13 games across all competitions.
