Mainz vs St. Pauli prediction 21.12.2025 | Bundesliga

The last season was one of the best in Mainz's history as they ended sixth on the table. The current campaign is entirely different. After almost half of the season, Mainz are at the bottom of the standings with six points fewer than safety. The team from Mewa Arena was in terrible form recently as they were without a victory in seven games in a row. The negative run ended on Thursday, when Mainz won 2-0 at home in the Conference League against Samsunspor. The home side was better throughout the game, and the fans can only hope that victory will provide a major confidence spark. 

After terrible results in the first months of the season, Mainz finally sacked Bo Henriksen a few weeks ago. At his place came Urs Fischer, who led the team to one victory and two draws across all competitions. In those three games, Mainz conceded only three goals, and that is a big improvement for the team with one of the worst defenses in the Bundesliga. 

Mainz have some problems with missing players. They will be without Philipp Mwene, Maxim Leitsch, Maxim Dal, and Anthony Caci on Sunday against St. Pauli. Also, Robin Zentner is questionable to play in the upcoming round. 

Last season, St. Pauli barely escaped relegation. The current campaign seems similar to Alexander Blessin's team, which collected 11 points in 14 league matches. However, things are looking slightly better lately as St. Pauli are unbeaten in the last three matches. In the previous game, Blessin's team won 2-1 at home against Heidenheim. The home side played with ten players for the complete second half, but although the guests dominated, St. Pauli found a way to record a valuable victory. 

For most of the season, St. Pauli struggled to score goals. That changed in the last few weeks, as Blessin's team scored five goals in the previous three games. 

Eric Smith received a red card in the previous Bundesliga round and will not travel to Mainz. The defender played in every game this season, so his absence could be a serious problem for St. Pauli. Blessin's team will also be without injured David Nemeth.
