Kazakhstan will be looking to secure their first home win in Group J of the 2026 World Cup European qualifiers when they welcome Wales to Astana on Thursday. Bookmakers have given the visitors a 75% chance of winning, which is fair enough given that they are four points ahead of the Hawks in the table. The two sides have met just once before, and that was in a Group J World Cup qualifier back in March. Craig Bellamy's Wales dominated the encounter, registering twelve shots on goal and scored three times. In contrast, Kazakhstan had just two shots on goal and scored only once.
Kazakhstan team overview
Kazakhstan went into the June international break brimming with confidence after securing two wins during the previous international fixtures. However, the Hawks were unable to replicate this form, losing both of their encounters: 4-1 to Belarus in a friendly and 1-0 to North Macedonia at home in the World Cup qualifiers.
Ali Aliyev’s side have now lost each of their last three home games without scoring, and are without a win in the last four. Having also conceded three goals in their last match against Wales, Thursday’s game could be another challenging one.
Mikhail Gabyshev was omitted from the squad named by Aliyev for this month's international break due to a cruciate ligament injury. The FC Ordabasy Shymkent trio of Bekkhan Shayzada, Sergey Maliy and Ular Zhaksybaev have been included.

Wales team overview
Meanwhile, Wales had a mixed international break in June, with the Dragons beginning with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein. They then played the current group leaders, Belgium, at the King Baudouin Stadium in the north-western district of Brussels and ended their unbeaten run.
Nonetheless, Craig Bellamy’s side put up a great fight against the Red Devils, finding the back of the net three times and had twice the number of shots on goal as their hosts (8 to 4).
Captain Aaron Ramsey is missing from the squad named for this month's international break. The Pumas UNAM midfielder has not played many minutes since returning from the hamstring injury he sustained in March, according to head coach Craig Bellamy.
Ethan Ampadu is also missing from the squad after suffering an injury in Leeds United's Premier League match against Everton two weeks ago.

Prediction
Wales demonstrated their ability to beat any opponent in their defeat to Belgium last time out. Including that match, the Dragons have scored at least three goals in all but one of their last five games and won three of them. Given that they are taking on a Kazakhstan side that has lost all three of its last home matches, anything other than an away win would be a surprise.
Three reasons we expect Wales to win this game
- Kazakhstan lost seven of their last eight competitive matches.
- Wales won four of their last seven competitive matches.
- Kazakhstan lost their last meeting with Wales 3-1.
