Some of the previous seasons were troublesome for Everton, as they feared relegation for most of the year. Last season, however, the Toffees showed signs of progress, finishing safely in mid-table. Despite that improvement, Everton are still viewed as a team that could slip back into relegation.

Everton had a disappointing preseason with two draws and four defeats. Bad form continued in the Premier League opening round, when Everton lost 1-0 on the road against Leeds. The home side finished the match with an xG of 2.14, while the guests had 0.80, so it is no wonder Everton stayed empty-handed. 

Everton have almost a full squad for Sunday's game against Brighton. Antonee Robinson is still nursing a knee injury and will not play, while Ryan Sessegnon is questionable and his status will be clearer closer to the kickoff. 

Although Brighton fell short of qualifying for European football in the 2025/26 season, they still enjoyed another strong campaign. The Seagulls are one of the most stable teams in the previous few seasons and that shouldn't change in the current year, either. Fabian Hurzeler's team had a good preseason with four wins and one draw. In their Premier League opener, they were heavy favorites at home against Fulham, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw after conceding a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time.

It is still early in the season, but Brighton already have a long list of absences. They will miss Solomon March, Julio Enciso Espinola, and Adam Webster on Sunday, while Jack Hinshelwood and Charalampos Kostoulas are questionable to play.
