Everton’s December started with real optimism. Back to back wins and clean sheets against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest had the crowd believing momentum was finally building.

That run stopped at Stamford Bridge last weekend, where David Moyes’ side lost 2-0 to Chelsea. Even so, the scoreline told only part of the story. Everton improved noticeably after the break, pressed higher, and forced Chelsea into mistakes.

At home, Moyes’ side have been quietly reliable. Just two defeats from nine games across all competitions suggests this is not a place visiting teams enjoy. That record, combined with recent success here against Arsenal, will not be lost on the players.

Jack Grealish has added spark since arriving on loan from Manchester City. Six goal contributions already tell you he has settled, and he looks set to carry much of the attacking responsibility again.

Injuries complicate things, though. Jarrad Branthwaite and Séamus Coleman both miss out with hamstring issues, while Merlin Röhl remains sidelined with a hernia problem.

Arsenal continue to move through this season with a calm sense of control. That has been the pattern not just this year, but across the last three campaigns where Mikel Arteta’s side have consistently finished second.

This time, however, the Gunners look determined to go one step further. Just two league defeats so far underline their consistency, and the defence remains the tightest in the division. Sitting two points clear at the top feels deserved rather than fortunate.

Europe has been equally convincing. Arteta’s side won all six Champions League group games, rotating where needed without losing rhythm.

Domestic form remains strong too, even if the recent league win over Wolves came with a slice of luck. One small concern is away form. Arsenal have managed only one win in their last four league trips, and that slight wobble keeps this fixture interesting.

William Saliba returned against Wolves, which was a boost, but Gabriel Magalhães, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White and Kai Havertz all remain unavailable. Riccardo Calafiori is back after suspension and offers Arteta another option as he looks to manage minutes in a busy period.
