Equatorial Guinea are still searching for their first point of AFCON 2025 as they head into Wednesday afternoon’s clash with Algeria in Rabat. It has been a rough group so far. The Red Devils sit bottom of Group E, while the Desert Foxes have already done enough to put themselves in control, winning both matches and setting the early pace. This preview looks at how both sides arrive at this game, who might be missing, and where the betting angles start to make sense.

Africa Cup of Nations Qualifications
Since 2022, these sides have met three times. Two of those came during AFCON qualification, the other at the tournament itself. Algeria generally had the upper hand, collecting two wins and keeping clean sheets in every meeting. The most recent clash in November 2024 ended in a draw, which felt like progress for Equatorial Guinea at the time. Goals tend to be rare here. On average, just one per game, which already hints at a familiar pattern.
Equatorial Guinea team overview
Hosting AFCON in 2015 remains the high point for Equatorial Guinea. That semi-final run still gets mentioned whenever expectations rise a little too quickly.
More recent tournaments were respectable rather than memorable. Quarter-finals in 2022, last 16 in 2024. This year feels harder.
Juan Micha’s side lost 2-1 to Burkina Faso and followed it with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sudan. The performances were not disastrous, but the margins keep going against them.
There is some relief, however. Basilio Ndong returns after a one-match suspension. Santiago Eneme is less fortunate and looks set to miss out after picking up a knee injury. Marvin Anieboh remains the Red Devils’ only scorer so far and will be keen to keep his place.

Algeria team overview
After painful group-stage exits in previous AFCONs, Algeria seem determined to respond properly. The Desert Foxes have been calm and efficient, beating Sudan and edging past Burkina Faso without conceding.
That run quietly stretches their unbeaten streak to 19 matches across all competitions. Riyad Mahrez already has three goals, although Vladimir Petković may manage his minutes with bigger tests ahead.
At the back, change feels unavoidable. Jaouen Hadjam is sidelined after picking up an early injury last time out, slightly disrupting an otherwise settled defence.

Prediction
Algeria look well placed for another narrow win. The Desert Foxes control games rather than overwhelm opponents, and that trend should continue here. Equatorial Guinea struggle to create clear chances, especially against organised sides. With qualification already secured, Petković’s team may rotate slightly. A disciplined 1-0 win feels about right.
Four reasons we expect under 2.5 goals
- None of the last three meetings between Algeria and Equatorial Guinea have produced more than 2.5 goals.
- Only one of Equatorial Guinea’s last six matches has gone beyond two goals.
- The Desert Foxes have kept clean sheets in both of their AFCON games so far.
- Algeria have shut out the opposition in four of their last six competitive matches.
Main prediction -
Under 2.5 goals
