English League Two predictions 2026/27 by MightyTips

The Sky Bet League Two is the fourth division of the English Football League (EFL). The 2026/27 season begins on August 15, 2026 and runs until May 8, 2027, with four teams promoted to League One and two clubs relegated to the National League.

The 2026/27 campaign will once again feature 24 teams competing for the right to advance to the division above. Newly relegated Exeter City, Port Vale, Rotherham United and Northampton Town have joined from League One, while York City and Rochdale have returned to the EFL from the National League. Bromley, Milton Keynes Dons and Cambridge United secured an automatic promotion last season, while Notts County won the play-offs.

Let's analyse the situation ahead of the season and try to make some League Two outright predictions on who'll be the winner, who is most likely to move up, and which two clubs are going down.

Who will win League Two in 2026/27?

According to the latest bookmakers' markets, Salford City are the favourites at around 5.00, followed by Bristol Rovers at 9.00, Barnet at 10.00, Port Vale at 13.00, while Chesterfield and York City sit at 15.00.

Salford are difficult to oppose after reaching the play-off final last season. Coach Karl Robinson has departed, with Peter Cklamovski taking charge, while the club have strengthened their attack with the arrivals of Macaulay Langstaff and Luke Molyneux. Langstaff is particularly important after scoring 29 League Two goals for Notts County in his previous spell at this level.

Bristol Rovers are another major contender. Steve Evans guided them to 11 wins in their final 14 matches last season, and the club have retained much of that squad while adding eight new players. They also made the January loan of Richie Smallwood from Tranmere permanent, while Ben Purrington arrived from Cambridge United.

Chesterfield remain dangerous after another play-off campaign. George McEachran, Jack Simpson, Alfie Pond and Fraser Bryden are among their notable additions.

Prediction: Salford City will finish first.

Who will be promoted from the English League Two?

Bristol Rovers look well placed for an immediate return to League One. Evans has extensive experience at this level, and the club's late-season form suggests they have the momentum required for a promotion challenge.

Barnet are our second promotion pick. They finished eighth last season but ended the campaign with seven wins from their final eight games. Their summer recruitment has added League Two experience, with Will Wright, Zac Williams and Tom Knowles among the key arrivals.

Chesterfield should also remain in the promotion picture. Paul Cook's side reached the play-offs last season and have strengthened intelligently rather than rebuilding the squad completely.

Port Vale and Grimsby Town are the strongest alternatives, while York City could surprise after winning the National League title. Port Vale have added striker Tyreece Simpson from Stevenage, while Grimsby made Andy Cook's loan move permanent, giving them an experienced attacking focal point.

Prediction: Bristol Rovers, Barnet and Chesterfield will earn a promotion along with Salford.

EFL League Two relegation prediction

The relegation battle could be just as competitive as the promotion race. Newport County are clear favourites for the drop at around 3.00, with Cheltenham, Accrington Stanley and Crawley Town among the other leading candidates. Tranmere Rovers are also priced prominently in the market, sitting at 6.50.

Newport look particularly vulnerable after surviving by only four points last season. They conceded 77 goals and have also dealt with managerial uncertainty, with Christian Fuchs leaving in June.

Shrewsbury Town are another major concern, as their ownership situation remains unresolved. They scored only four goals across their final 10 matches last season, highlighting the lack of attacking quality that could ultimately prove decisive.

Accrington have a small budget and won only one of their final 14 matches last season, while Crawley have made several interesting additions but still look short of proven League Two quality.

Prediction: Newport County and Shrewsbury Town will lose their professional status after this season.

EFL Sky Bet League Two format: How it works?

The EFL Sky Bet League Two is the fourth tier of professional football in England, sitting below League One. It features 24 teams, each playing 46 matches per season in a double round-robin format - once at home and once away against every other club.

The season runs from August to May, so there will be plenty of EFL League Two predictions by MightyTips. Most games are played on weekends, but there are also midweek fixtures. At the end of the season, the top three teams earn automatic promotion to League One. Clubs finishing 4th to 7th enter the play-offs, which consist of two-legged semi-finals and a final at the legendary Wembley Stadium. The winner of the final gets the fourth promotion spot.

At the bottom end of the table, the last two teams are relegated to the National League (the fifth division) and lose their EFL status. This relegation structure is unique compared to the top three tiers, which each relegate three teams.

What type of League Two tips do we offer?

Our League Two football tips go beyond a few standard picks. MightyTips' pundits try to assess the entire range of betting options before making their final predictions.

There are times when we keep things straightforward, predicting that both teams will score or that a draw will be the outcome. However, when looking for the valuable spots, we could easily opt for props, handicaps, and other special markets. After all, sometimes even making a bet builder is not a bad idea.

How to make reliable English League Two predictions?

Making accurate predictions requires more than just looking at league tables or recent form. Due to the competitive and unpredictable nature of this division, a detailed and well-rounded approach is essential. Here are the key factors to consider when making your predictions for League Two:

  • Recent form and squad news: Examine how teams have performed in their last five games. A side on a winning streak may carry momentum, and vice versa. It's just as essential to check for injuries or suspensions to key players, especially goalkeepers, who have the most significant impact on the final score.
  • Home and away performance: Some teams perform significantly better at home, while others thrive on the road. Analysing home and away records can reveal aspects that aren't immediately apparent in overall standings, especially when making predictions for closely matched fixtures.
  • Motivation and stakes: Is the team fighting for a playoff spot, promotion, or avoiding relegation? Motivation levels differ dramatically late in the season. A mid-table team with nothing to play for might rotate players, while others will dig twice as deep for crucial results.
  • Head-to-head history: Although not always decisive, past meetings between two clubs can reveal tactical matchups or mental advantages. Look for trends, especially in local derbies or matches between rivals.
  • Squad depth and rotation: With a tight fixture list, especially around winter holidays, managers may rotate players. Teams with deeper benches are much better equipped to handle such situations.
