To date, the two national teams have faced each other on nine occasions. Currently, Bulgaria holds a slight edge with four victories to Georgia’s three, while the remaining two encounters ended in draws. However, their first World Cup qualifying clash proved to be a one-sided affair, with Georgia comprehensively defeating Bulgaria 3–0.
Bulgaria team overview
Once a regular presence at the World Cup between 1962 and 1998, Bulgaria’s golden era now feels like a distant memory. The Lions are still searching for their first final tournament appearance of the 21st century, and their struggles appear to be intensifying with each passing year.
The clearest illustration of their problems comes from the current 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, where Bulgaria have been comprehensively outplayed in all five opening fixtures, conceding a staggering 18 goals — a figure that highlights the severity of their defensive woes.
To make matters worse, the arrival of Aleksandar Dimitrov in place of Ilian Iliev has yet to spark any improvement. Under new head coach, the team has lost all three matches, extending Bulgaria’s winless run to ten games.
For the upcoming clash against Georgia, Bulgaria will be without Radoslav Kirilov, the team’s only scorer in this WCQ campaign, while Anton Nedyalkov, Fabian Nurnberger, and Petko Hristov also remain unavailable.

Georgia team overview
In stark contrast to Tuesday’s hosts, Georgia have been steadily progressing year after year, with their most recent demonstration coming at Euro 2024 in Germany, where they reached the Round of 16 before eventually succumbing 4-1 to a dominant Spain.
When it comes to their first-ever World Cup appearance, the Crusaders will have to wait at least another four years, having been unable to challenge Spain and Turkey for the top two spots in their qualifying section.
Indeed, their three-goal dismantling of Bulgaria in early September stands as their only points so far in this underwhelming World Cup qualifying campaign. Georgia will be eager to replicate that dominance from the first encounter and put an end to a three-game losing streak.
Ahead of the final qualifying test, coach Willy Sagnol will be without Otar Kakabadze, Saba Goglichidze, and leading scorer Georges Mikautadze, while Anzor Mekvabishvili remains a serious doubt after being substituted early against Spain.

Prediction
The fact that Bulgaria has suffered defeats in all of their qualification matches so far, conceding a staggering 18 goals in the process, is almost impossible to ignore. It is increasingly likely that they will be among the few teams to finish the WCQ campaign without a single point.
The last time Georgia visited Sofia, they enjoyed a perfect day, dismantling the Lions 5-2. With Khvicha Kvaratskhelia leading the charge, confidence is high that Georgia will complete their WCQ campaign on a triumphant note.
Three Reasons we expect Georgia to Win
- Bulgaria have struggled to find victory in their last 10 matches, losing eight of them.
- Bulgaria have conceded 3+ goals in five of their last six matches.
- Georgia demolished Bulgaria with three unanswered goals in the reverse fixture.
