Benin's best result in history at the African Cup of Nations was in 2019, when they reached the quarterfinals. However, interestingly, Benin had never recorded a victory in a tournament before 2025.

Benin started this year's tournament with a 1-0 defeat against DR Congo. Four days later, they won 1-0 against Botswana. In both matches, Gernot Rohr's team showed serious problems in creativity, but they were still good enough to secure a valuable victory that could be enough for the next phase.
