The 35th edition of the AFCON is about to get underway. On the third day of the tournament, two-time champions Algeria will take on Sudan in their opening group-stage match. Ahead of the competition, bookmakers see Morocco as the clear favorite to lift the trophy, with odds of around 3.0. Senegal, Algeria, and Egypt are considered the next strongest contenders, with odds ranging between 6.0 and 8.0. In contrast, Sudan are viewed as one of the weakest teams in the tournament, and even reaching the knockout stage could prove to be a major challenge for them.

These teams have already met twice this year. In the FIFA Arab Cup, only 20 days ago, we saw a goalless draw, and in the African Nations Championship Quarter Finals, Sudan won after a penalty shootout 2:1. In total, these teams played nine times, with Algeria winning four times, while Sudan secured two victories.

Regarding the number of goals, only one game ended with three or more goals (in regular time), while both teams scored just twice.

Algeria

Algeria team overview

Algeria are #35 in the FIFA World Ranking List and fourth-best in the CAF Region, behind Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt. However, they haven't had much success lately, having failed to reach the past two World Cups and finishing in the group stage at the past two AFCONs.

Still, before the AFCON, Algeria did great in the World Cup Qualifiers, easily securing their place in the main tournament with 25 points in 10 rounds. On the negative side, the popular Greens had an underwhelming FIFA Arab Cup, as the UAE eliminated them in the quarter-finals. Still, we can give them a pass on that one because they haven't had their best players from European clubs. In the AFCON, the situation will be very different since they will have most of their stars available. Unfortunately, players like Amine Gouiri and Houssem Aouar are missing due to injuries.

Sudan

Sudan team overview

Sudan are the 118th team according to the FIFA World Ranking List and the 31st in the CAF region. They are a team that has never reached the World Cup in their history and even struggled to reach AFCON in the previous years, having only one appearance in the previous six tournaments. Interestingly, Sudan have one AFCON title, two second-place finishes, and one third-place finish. However, all of those good results happened a very long time ago, between 1957 and 1970.

Before the AFCON, Sudan again failed to qualify for the World Cup and were pretty bad in the FIFA Arab Cup, finishing their competition in the group stage with only one point in three rounds.

Prediction

Algeria are a much better team overall and have been really good defensively. Even without their best players in the Arab Cup, they managed to keep their net intact in two out of four games. Additionally, they kept their net intact in five out of nine games across the competition - 56%.

Sudan were great for this type of bet, mostly due to their terrible offense. They failed to score in eight out of the past ten games across the competitions, and it is unrealistic to expect them to score against one of the best teams in the AFCON.

Moreover, we saw BTTS - NO in seven out of nine h2h games. Considering the trend in the previous h2h games and all the above, an under 2.5 goals bet seems like the best option for this AFCON tie.

3 Reasons why at least one team should fail to score

  1. Algeria kept their net intact in five out of the last nine games across the competitions
  2. Sudan failed to score in eight out of the last ten matches
  3. We saw BTTS - NO in seven out of nine h2h games
