Alaves came to this season after a very good one, one the best ones in the 21st century. They finished 10th, and since most football pundits considered them a relegation candidate, it was a massive success. Unfortunately, they failed to build on that momentum and are struggling this season. Right now, they are 16th with 13 points in 14 rounds, which is around 0.3 ppg per game less than last year. Even though they are still in the safe zone, the difference between them and the 12th-placed Valencia is only three points, and Valencia played two fewer games. So, these games against other relegation contenders are super important.

Leganes returned this season to the Spanish top-flight division after four years spent in La Liga 2. Their goal is only to survive somehow, and for now, they are doing fine, at least by their standards. Currently, they sit in 14th place with 14 points, one point away from their next opponent, Alaves, and four points away from the danger zone.
