After a 3:1 win for Benfica over Aarhus in the first round of the Europa League Playoffs Qualifiers, these teams will face off in the second leg to decide which team advances to the main phase and which must settle for the Conference League main phase. Between the two legs, Benfica rested, while Aarhus played a 2:2 draw with Odense.

Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this Europa League Qualifiers tie.

AGF Aarhus vs Benfica Head to Head (H2H) stats

  1. Benfica

    Europa League

In the first leg, Benfica absolutely dominated the match throughout, and the 3:1 scoreline does not represent just how dominant they were. The Eagles had 71% ball possession, 4.64 xG compared to Aarhus's 0.49. They also had 13 shots on goal against Aarhus' one. Besides last week's fixture, these teams met twice more in the Champions League. However, that was back in 1987, with Benfica winning 1:0 at home, while the other match in Denmark ended in a goalless draw.

Aarhus team overview

Aarhus won the Danish title last season and started the European qualifiers for the Champions League. After knocking out Lech Poznan in a super interesting fixture, they were eliminated by Sabah Baku. Interestingly, they were trashed by both sides on the road and were a lot better at home. It will be interesting whether they can recreate that against such a strong team as Benfica. And in the domestic Superliga, Aarhus were atrocious, securing a 0-3-1 W-D-L record. At the moment, they sit in 10th place, out of 12 teams.

After a 2:2 draw with Odense, coach Jakob Poulsen spoke to the media. He said they delivered a very strong performance for most of the 90 minutes. The coach said that two mistakes in the first half eventually stopped them from winning all three points.

When it comes to injuries, the players who missed the previous games should remain sidelined - Kevin Yakob, Frederik Tingager, Nicolai Poulsen, Richmond Gyamfi.

Benfica

Benfica team overview

Benfica comes into this season after a pretty strange one last season. The Eagles were undefeated in the Liga Portugal under coach Jose Mourinho but still finished only in 3rd place, with eight points away from the top spot. They finished the season trophyless and eventually made significant changes in the squad, but also on the bench, as Marco Silva arrived instead of Mourinho. Silva was in charge of Fulham and made them a stable mid-table team.

Looking at the transfers, the squad itself might be a bit weaker compared to last season, but the Eagles started the season fairly well across competitions. They are with one foot in the Europa League main phase and have won four points in the opening two games in the domestic league. Considering the changes that occurred, they can be satisfied with how things are developing.

With Fredrik Aursnes recovering from his fitness issues, Benfica should have no absences for the upcoming game. Aursnes played in the previous World Cup with Norway and was given some time to recover. However, he got some playing time in the previous game against Aarhus and will only get more and more minutes as the season progresses. Still, we do not expect him in the starting lineup yet.

Prediction

In the first leg, Benfica absolutely dominated the game from start to finish. The difference in quality was obvious, and we highly doubt there is much Aarhus can do to turn things around at home, even though they are a team that plays a lot better at home. Still, we believe the difference in quality is simply too great.

Moreover, the difference in form is massive as well in favor of Benfica. Aarhus won just one point in the past four games, with 11 goals conceded. Meanwhile, Benfica are without a loss in the past six games, while winning four and averaging 4.0 goals scored per game!

Considering all the above, we believe the Eagles should secure another comfortable win over Aarhus.

3 Reasons why Benfica should win and cover the -1 AH spread

  1. Aarhus won one point in the past four games
  2. Benfica won four of the past six games
  3. Benfica won the first leg 3:1 and completely dominated the game
