- Competition: UEFA Europa League Qualifiers
- Date: Thursday, 31st, July 2025
- Kickoff: 19:00 UK / 20:00 CEST
- Venue: Stadion Galgenwaard (Utrecht)
On a mission to protect their two-goal advantage, Utrecht will host Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol in Thursday’s second-leg clash of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
Having already taken a commanding stride towards the third qualifying round of the Europa League by dismantling Sheriff 3-1 on foreign soil, Utrecht will now aim to rubber-stamp their progression with another polished display in front of their home supporters. The Moldovan team have no choice but to push forward, but that strategy might backfire.

Utrecht team news
Despite a modest pre-season showing with just two wins from five friendlies, Utrecht made a strong statement in their first official outing by thrashing Sheriff 3-1.
Mike Eerdhuijzen remains sidelined for Utrecht, along with midfielders Zidane Iqbal and Can Bozdogan, although the former pair could be back in action in the early weeks of the new Eredivisie season.
Pleased with the dominant performance in their 3-1 victory over the Moldovan side, manager Ron Jans plans to go with the same starting group and stick to the usual 4-4-2 formation.

Sheriff Tiraspol team news
Sheriff Tiraspol’s form has taken a dive, suffering three defeats in their last four outings, the latest being a 3-2 loss to Zimbru that brought their unbeaten league streak to an end.
Luis Phelipe remains unavailable due to an injury sustained back on April 24, leaving him as the sole absentee for the Moldovan club heading into Thursday’s continental encounter.
Facing a two-goal deficit, Sheriff’s interim coach Victor Mihailov will need to adopt a more aggressive approach, and an offensive formation wouldn’t come as a surprise.

Prediction
Utrecht head into the second leg with a commanding advantage and hold the tactical upper hand, making it unlikely that Sheriff can pull off a miraculous comeback, but the Moldovan side may still find moments to challenge and electrify the scoreboard in what promises to be an engaging contest. While Sheriff won’t give up hope of a comeback, their recent outings in Europe tell a tough story since the Moldovan outfit has found themselves on the losing end in six out of such seven UEFA clashes, often conceding multiple goals and failing to keep their defensive shape intact.
Worse still, the Yellow-Blacks are currently going through a torrid run of results as they arrive at Galgenwaard with three losses in their last four competitive fixtures, which clearly hurting their chances of hoping for a miracle in Thursday's battle. In stark contrast, Utrecht have produced impressive performances at home recently, including a dominating 4-0 demolition of Dutch giants Ajax, so they will certainly aim to open their home commitments for the new 2025-26 campaign in an authoritative and convincing manner.
Sheriff have consistently shown they can carve out scoring chances regardless of the opposition, but their shaky defensive setup is unlikely to hold firm against a Utrecht side buzzing with attacking momentum, so we expect the hosts to stamp their authority in a high-scoring affair reminiscent of last week’s fireworks.
Four Reasons we expect Over 2.5 Goals
- Including all matches starting from the summer preparations, Utrecht have seen three or more goals in 5 of their last 6 outings.
- Sheriff Tiraspol have been beaten in three of their last four matches across various competitions.
- Sheriff Tiraspol’s most recent pair of competitive matches have seen them concede as many as 6 goals.
- In last week’s first leg, Utrecht celebrated a strong 3-1 victory.
