What is the UEFA Nations League?

The Nations League is a tournament held every two years and organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). It was introduced to replace most international friendlies with more competitive fixtures, offering national teams meaningful games and additional routes to qualify for major competitions such as the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup.

The first edition was staged in 2018/19, featuring 55 UEFA member nations. Teams were placed into four leagues (A, B, C, D) according to their ranking coefficients, with each league divided into smaller groups. Matches are played home and away, and the system of promotion and relegation between leagues keeps the format dynamic. League A concludes with the Nations League Finals, a mini-tournament consisting of semifinals, a third-place match, and a final to determine the winner.

In addition to producing champions, the Nations League also grants playoff spots for the EURO and the World Cup, creating valuable opportunities for smaller nations. Since its launch, the tournament has quickly established itself as a central feature of Europe's international football calendar.

How will the Nations League 2026/27 work?

The 2026/27 UEFA Nations League will be the fifth edition of the tournament. Teams are divided into four leagues (A, B, C, D) based on their results from the 2024/25 season. Leagues A, B, and C each have 16 teams split into four groups of four, while League D has six teams divided into two groups of three. Matches are played home and away in a round-robin format.

The league phase takes place from September to November 2026. In March 2027, League A will have two-legged quarterfinals to determine who reaches the Finals, while promotion and relegation playoffs will be held between Leagues A/B and B/C. The League A Finals (semifinals, third-place match, and final) are scheduled for June 2027.

Group winners in Leagues B, C, and D earn promotion, while the bottom teams in Leagues A and B are relegated. The Nations League will also provide playoff spots for Euro 2028 qualification.
