Switzerland team overview

Following their successful international break in June, during which they beat Mexico and the USA 8–2 on aggregate, Switzerland were looking to maintain their momentum when they hosted Kosovo on Friday for their Group B World Cup qualifier.

The Red Crosses were outstanding in that encounter, especially in the first 45 minutes, during which they scored four goals. Murat Yakin’s side maintained their four-goal lead to secure a 4-0 victory, and will be aiming to cement their position at the top of the group with another win on Monday.

Following his brace last time out, Breel Embolo has now scored 20 goals for Switzerland, and the Rennes forward will lead the line on Monday, while former Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji will be at the heart of the defence.

Slovenia

Slovenia team overview

Slovenia also enjoyed a perfect international break in June, winning both of their matches. The Little Dragons beat Luxembourg and Bosnia and Herzegovina 3–1 on aggregate, but were unable to extend this winning streak in their opening Group B World Cup qualifier against Sweden.

Nevertheless, head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson will be pleased with the fighting spirit his players showed as they came from a goal down to draw 2–1. Despite failing to score in that game, Manchester United forward Benjamin Šeško will keep his place up front and could be partnered by Sporar.

Prediction

With Switzerland and Slovenia having gone unbeaten in their last four and six matches respectively, it’s difficult to pick a clear winner from this tie.  However, I fancy the Red Crosses, given their home advantage and the fact that they won their last three home meetings with Slovenia 6–1 on aggregate. I am expecting a close game that could end in a 1–0 home win.

Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. Switzerland kept a clean sheet in each of their last two matches.
  2. Three of the last four meetings between Switzerland and Slovenia ended with under 2.5 goals.
  3. Only one of the last four competitive away games of Slovenia produced more than two goals.
