The Premier League returnees Sunderland welcome League One side Huddersfield Town to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening for a Round 2 clash in the EFL Cup.
As a Premier League club, Sunderland had the privilege of skipping the preliminary round of the competition, while Huddersfield had to face Leicester City in Round 1. The Terriers battled to a hard-fought 2-2 draw over 120 minutes before edging the Foxes 3-2 on penalties.

Championship
Both sides spent the last couple of seasons competing in the Championship, meeting four times between late 2022 and early 2024. Huddersfield held the upper hand in the most recent encounters, defeating Sunderland 1-0 in 2024 and earning a 2-1 away win in 2023. The last time Sunderland came out on top was during the 2022/23 season, when the Black Cats claimed a 2-0 victory.
Sunderland team overview
Sunderland enjoyed the perfect return to the Premier League on the opening day of the 2025/26 season after an eight-year absence, cruising to a 3-0 home victory over West Ham United. However, their first away match back in the top flight proved far less successful, as Burnley handed Regis Le Bris’ side a 2-0 defeat at the weekend.
Defender Daniel Ballard was forced off the pitch early in the Burnley match and is now a major doubt for Tuesday’s cup tie. Jenson Seelt is expected to be his most likely replacement at the heart of Sunderland’s defence.

Huddersfield Town team overview
Huddersfield began their 2025/26 domestic campaign much earlier than Sunderland. The League One side have already played five league matches and, as things stand, are on course to potentially push for a return to the Championship next season. Lee Grant’s men have picked up four wins from their opening five fixtures in the space of just three weeks.
Midfielder Ben Wiles and forward Alfie May have been the team’s standout performers so far, with two goals each from the opening run of games in League One.

Prediction
When a Premier League side hosts a League One team, the prediction usually seems straightforward in terms of who is favoured to advance. However, the early rounds of the EFL Cup often defy expectations—particularly when the clubs involved have faced each other in the Championship not too long ago.
Sunderland hold a moderate edge as Premier League newcomers, but Huddersfield will arrive full of confidence after winning four of their five League One fixtures in August. The Terriers have also recorded two consecutive H2H victories over Sunderland in recent seasons. For that reason, this tie could be closer than many anticipate, with Huddersfield potentially capable of pushing the match into extra time.
Three reasons we expect Double chance x2
- Huddersfield have won 4 of their last 5 matches in League One.
- Huddersfield defeated Sunderland in back-to-back meetings in recent seasons.
- Sunderland lost 2-0 to Burnley at the weekend, and their main focus may not be on the EFL Cup.
