Strasbourg

Strasbourg team overview

After last season’s seventh-place finish, which secured their long-awaited return to European competition, Strasbourg show no signs of easing off. Instead, Le Racing appear determined to prove that their previous campaign was no fluke as they now set their sights on seriously entering the race for Champions League positions.

In midweek action, Strasbourg maintained their impressive momentum in the UECL, collecting their 10th point from the opening four group-stage fixtures. Their latest triumph came in a standout performance against Premier League outfit Crystal Palace, a 2-1 win that kept them second in the section and level on points with surprise package Samsunspor.

Domestically, however, the picture has been far less polished of late. The Blue and Whites have struggled to establish consistency, caught in a frustrating win-loss rotation across their last five Ligue 1 outings — defeat, victory, defeat, victory, and another setback last time out, falling 1-0 to RC Lens.

Even so, a return to home soil should offer renewed optimism. Liam Rosenior’s men have put together a strong five-match unbeaten run at La Meinau in all competitions, winning four of those contests and restoring confidence in front of their supporters.

Strasbourg will, however, be without young duo Saidou Sow and Abdoul Ouattara, who remain sidelined through injury, while Valentin Barco is set to serve a one-match suspension following his sending-off in the recent clash with RC Lens.

Brest

Brest team overview

While Brest were one of the biggest surprises in the 2023-24 French top flight, finishing third and securing a historic Champions League qualification, they have struggled to replicate that remarkable feat this season and currently find themselves battling at the opposite end of the table.

Just a year ago they graced Europe’s most prestigious club competition, but Les Pirates’ current campaign paints a very different picture. With a meager 13 points to their name, they sit just two points above the relegation zone, flirting dangerously with the drop.

Eric Roy’s side did, however, manage to capitalize on the slip-ups of fellow relegation-threatened teams, claiming a dramatic 3-2 victory over Metz to finally end a dreadful six-match winless streak and lift themselves temporarily out of the drop zone.

To maintain their precarious position, Brest must address their ongoing struggles on the road. They have claimed just one victory in their first six away matches, losing four in the process.

In terms of personnel, first-choice goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki is sidelined with a knee injury and will miss Sunday’s clash, while Bradley Locko continues to recover from a leg issue. Soumaila Coulibaly is also unavailable, as he is on loan and cannot face his parent club.

Prediction

Strasbourg at home is a machine right now, riding a three league game winning wave at the Stade de la Meinau, and they’re not planning to stop while chasing that UCL spot, and even though Brest have given them trouble in the past, this season’s road woes make them vulnerable, so expect Rosenior’s side to put on a free-scoring show and leave their fans cheering long after the final whistle.

Three Reasons we expect Strasbourg to Win

  1. Strasbourg have won all but one of their last five matches at the Stade de la Meinau.
  2. Strasbourg are currently on a three-game winning streak at home in Ligue 1.
  3. Brest have ended up on the losing side in all but two of their opening six away visits.
