Last season was good, but stressful for St. Pauli, as they ended with three points more than the relegation playoff zone. Pundits again see St. Pauli as one of the weakest teams in the Bundesliga, but they started the year well, so there is no reason not to believe that another solid season is possible. Although St. Pauli had some problems in the cup against Norderstedt, they followed it with four points in the opening two Bundesliga rounds. In the last match before the international break, St. Pauli won 2-0 on the road against Hamburger SV. The guests ended the game with xG of 1.44, while the home side had only 0.35, so St. Pauli's victory was well deserved. 

St. Pauli have some injury problems ahead of Sunday's game against Augsburg as Ricky-Jade Jones and David Nemeth are unavailable. Also, Karol Mets, Jackson Irvine, and Abdoulie Ceesay are questionable. 

Augsburg had another good year. They ended the previous season closer to mid-table than the relegation zone, and Alexander Blessin's team hopes to repeat that. After a good win in the cup and Bundesliga against Hallescher and Freiburg, Augsburg suffered their first defeat of the season, 3-2 at home against Bayern Munich. The guests probably deserved to win with a more significant difference. 

Augsburg were active on the last day of the summer transfer window as they added Fabian Rieder (who came from Rennes) and Ismael Gharbi (Braga). Both players could debut on Sunday afternoon. 

Augsburg have a long list of absentees. Maximilian Bauer, Alexis Claude-Maurice, Dimitris Giannoulis, Mert Komur, Keven Schlotterbeck, and Samuel Essende will not play on Sunday afternoon. Also, Robin Fellhauer and Anton Kade are questionable, and their status will be clearer closer to the kickoff.
