The knockout phase of the African Cup of Nations continues on Sunday evening as South Africa takes on Cameroon.

The Al-Barid Stadium is the venue for an intriguing contest as Bafana Bafana and the Indominitable Lions square-off with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

Previous meetings have been incredibly tight, and another nail-biting contest seems likely in Rabat.

South Africa and Cameroon have met on four previous occasions since 2008. South Africa won one match while each of their last three encounters finished level.

South Africa team overview

South African continue their bid for AFCON glory after a strong performance in the group phase. The Bafana Bafana finished second in Group B, picking up two wins against Angola (2:1) and Zimbabwe (3:2) while losing 1:0 against Egypt.

With a second World Cup finals appearance to look forward to this summer, Hugo Broos´s side have plenty of confidence and form. South Africa won four of their last five games, while they have lost just one of 12 matches played since June.

Entertaining outcomes have been relatively frequent in recent fixtures. Three of South Africa´s last four matches finished with BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored, including their thrilling win against Zimbabwe earlier this week.

Head coach Broos could make one or two changes to his first XI on Sunday. Sphephelo "Yaya" Sithole could drop out after he was withdrawn after just 45 minutes of Monday´s narrow win against Zimbabwe.

Cameroon team overview

Cameroon come into Sunday’s AFCON round-of-16 tie after a narrow 2:1 win over Mozambique sealed their place in the knockout phase. Despite falling behind in the first half, they showed composure to turn the game around and finish second in Group F. David Pagou’s side opened their campaign with a 1:0 victory against Gabon before playing out a 1:1 draw with Ivory Coast.

Cameroon have not been at their best this year, failing to win five of their nine most recent international fixtures, including a World Cup playoff defeat against DR Congo ensured their non-participation in next summer´s finals.

Head coach Pagou has one or two injury issues to deal with this weekend. Captain Nouhou Tolo faces a late fitness test.

Prediction

Both teams have shown some defensive vulnerabilities in the group phase, and I fancy BTTS at a decent price.

I'm putting my money on both sides to score, while I also expect South Africa to at least avoid a 90 minute defeat.

Three Reasons Why We Expect BTTS

  1. South Africa have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 4 matches
  2. Cameroon have seen BTTS in their last 2 matches
  3. Cameroon have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 4 matches against South Africa
