- Venue: King Abdullah Sports City (Jeddah)
As the third stage of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup nears its conclusion, a few key questions remain unanswered. In Group C, Japan have already secured the top spot, but the battle for the second automatic qualification place is not over. Australia still risks missing out on a direct ticket to the tournament if they suffer a heavy defeat in their final match on Tuesday night in Jeddah.
Saudi Arabia have had a surprisingly inconsistent qualifying campaign and now finds themselves in a position where only a five-goal win against Australia would allow them to leapfrog their rivals into second place. There are, however, signs of improvement. Hervé Renard's team have collected seven points from their last three matches, including a solid 2-0 away win over Bahrain in the previous round.
On the other hand, Australia are not playing eye-catching football, but they've proven to be resilient and effective. Australia lost only one match so far and found itself in a good position ahead of the final match in Jeddah. Tony Popovic's team won the last three matches in a row. In the previous game, they won 1-0 at home against Japan. Australia finished the match with only 31% ball possession and six shots on goal, yet still managed to secure a victory that put them in an excellent position.
Saudi Arabia vs Australia pick: Under 2.5 goals
Yes, Saudi Arabia needs a big victory to progress after this phase of the World Cup, but that is easier to say than done. Saudi Arabia scored only six goals in nine matches so far. On the other hand, Australia allowed only six goals. We shouldn't expect more than two goals in this game between Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Saudi Arabia team news
Saudi Arabia won 2-0 against Bahrain, but they need a big win on Tuesday night in Jeddah. The head coach, Herve Renard, urges his players that it is still possible for them to qualify directly for the World Cup. Renard said, "The conditions must be very good for us to qualify. The door is almost closed, but we must try to qualify.
"In football, you have to be effective. Today, we had many chances, just like in the match against China (PR), and we didn't score."
