The numbers, ninth place with 16 points from 13 games, may not be quite in keeping with the ambitions of a club the size of Sociedad, but they look less gloomy when you recall where La Real was a year ago.

This time last term they were 12th and with fewer points; Sergio Francisco’s side has been clicking into gear. The Royal now find themselves unbeaten in 6 league fixtures, with four wins on the spin including victory against Osasuna, Negreira, Sevilla and their Basque neighbours.

Two of those wins came at the Reale Arena, which is enough to convince themselves that they can cause Villarreal problems. Orri Óskarsson and Yangel Herrera both remain on the sidelines with thigh and calf issues.

The Yellow Submarine have also improved significantly on last season and this is a game that they will approach with real confidence.

Four consecutive league victories and an unbeaten streak of five have them looking like real contenders once more, at least on the domestic front.

It has been a different story in Europe, however. Their four Champions League matches against Tottenham, Manchester City, Pafos and Dortmund all ended in defeats, The Yellow Submarine not scoring in any of the four clashes and that will raise more than a few eyebrows.

Their forward play has cut a sharper edge in La Liga, where they have scored at least twice in each of their past five matches. Pape Gueye and Tajon Buchanan are both a booking away from suspension, with Pau Cabanes, Logan Costa and Willy Kambwala sidelined.
